Dia de los Muertos

Latino Community, specifically Mexican and Mexican-American Community Members

Dia de los Muertos is  a day of honoring ancestors and deceased family members. This is a holiday celebrated primarily in Mexico and can include evening activities (ofrenda, prayers, family gatherings). 

Tihar

Nepali Community

Tihar is a five day long festival, similar to Diwali, and is celebrated primarily by the Nepali community. Tihar is a celebration of good over evil and on the third day, honors the Goddess Lakshmi. This holiday is also called the festival lights and is celebrated through prayers, food, and family gatherings. 

Maha Shivaratri

 

Maha Shivaratri is a celebration of the Hindu God, Lord Shiva and his union to Devi Parvati. This is a significant holiday because Lord Shiva embodies mindfulness and Devi Parvati emboides nature; their union signifies the union of consciousness and energy, which facilitates creation. This day is celebrated through a day long fast, and all night religious observances.

Lunar New Year

 

The Lunar New Year is celebrated by the Eastern cultures of China, Korea, Vietnam, and other countries. The Lunar New Year is referred by different names in China, Vietnam, and Korea; it is called Chūnjié in Mandarin, Seollal in Korean, and Tết in Vietnamese. This holiday signifies the start of a New Year and honors family ancestors and heavenly deities. Each community celebrates differently but this day can be is observed by a day of family gatherings and celebrations to mark the start of spring.

Makar Sankranti

 

Makar Sankranti is a Hindu Harvest Festival that celebrates the end of Winter by welcoming the longer days of the summer season. This festival is also known as Sankranti, which celebrates the Sun God, Lord Surya. This festival is celebrated through family gatherings, ritual bathing, prayers, and food to signify a desire for unity, peace, harmony.
