Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah signifies the Jewish New Year and recalls the creation of the world. It is one of the two High Holy Days, the other being Yom Kippur. On this day, work is prohibited and members of the Jewish faith may spend much of the holiday attending synagogue and family gatherings.

Songkran and Thingyan (Buddhist, Thai, and Burmese New Year)

Songkran and Thingyan is a Water festival that marks the beginning of the new year in Buddhism and marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year and the Burmese New Year. Songkran (April 13th-15th) and Thingyan (April 13th-16th) may have different dates. Both holidays are observed through the water festival (pouring of water on Buddha images and Buddhist Monks) to wash away the past year's misgivings and bad luck, as well as serve as a time for family gatherings.

Qing Ming Day

Qing Ming Festival, known in Mandarin as Qīngmíng jié or Tomb Sweeping Day is a traditional Chinese holiday. On this day, families honor their ancestors by offering food, burning incense, and sweeping their tombs.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a month of fasting (refraining from food or drink) from sunrise to sunset for members of the Muslim community. Ramadan is seen as one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, as it is believed that the Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad during this month. The end of each fasting day during Ramadan culminates in prayer and the breaking of the fast.

Nowruz

Nowruz is the Persian New Year, and means "new day." This is a day that can involve prayers and festivals, depending on the region and is observed by Zoroastrians, Baháʼís, some Muslim communities, and is considered a national holiday in Iran and Afghanistan.

Holi

A holy day celebrated by the Hindu community that signifies the arrival of the spring harvest season and the end of winter. Holi is typically celebrated over two days and signifies the triumph of good over evil.

Kwanzaa

African and African American Communities

Kwanzaa is week long celebration (with each day having its own signifiance) of African American heritage, culture,and community, observed through evening meals and family gatherings.

Christmas is a holy day celebrated by the Christian community, signifying the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is observed by family and social gatherings, as well as prayers.

Noche Buena/ Christmas Eve

Latino Community and Christianity

Noche Buena ("good night") or Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas, marking the end of Advent season, the period of preparing for Christmas. This day is observed by family and social gatherings, prayers, and opening of the gifts by some members of the Latino and Christian community.
