Austin ISD Opens Additional Warming Centers

Austin ISD has opened two more of its campuses to serve as warming centers for families from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. 

  • Lee Elementary, 3308 Hampton Rd, Austin, TX 78705
  • Murchison Middle School, 3700 N Hills Dr, Austin, TX 78731.

The centers are open to any families who need access to a warm location during this historic weather event.

The City of Austin and Austin ISD have also opened the following facilities to families,

Austin ISD Classes, Work Canceled Feb. 16-18

For the safety of all our students and staff, Austin ISD is canceling classes Tuesday, Feb. 16, Wednesday, Feb. 17 and Thursday, Feb. 18. This Friday, Feb. 19 will be an asynchronous learning day. 

No students will report to campus Feb. 16., Feb. 17, Feb. 18 or Feb. 19, and buses will not transport students. There will be no remote instruction Feb. 16, Feb. 17 or Feb. 18 as internet and power outages may affect students’ ability to attend online classes. 

Weather Update: No Class on Monday, Classes Remote on Feb. 16

In anticipation of forecasted winter weather, and to ensure the safety of all our students and staff, all Austin ISD classes will be 100 percent remote Tuesday, Feb. 16.
 
No students will report to campus on Feb. 16 and buses will not transport students. To ensure the safety of our staff and others on the road, Austin ISD WiFi buses will not operate. Instead, campus staff will reach out to students without internet access via phone to coordinate alternative learning plans.
 

Alternative Work Arrangement pilot program proves effective, expands to other campuses

Teachers and staff from select campuses kicked off the spring semester by implementing a staffing pilot program, which allowed flexibility to accommodate alternative work arrangements while maintaining a focus on student success.

Campuses proposed the Alternative Work Arrangement pilot program plans to district leadership and the superintendent in December 2020. Once approved, the program launched in six campuses––Cunningham and Padrón elementary schools, Burnet and Covington middle schools, Bowie High School and Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders.

Sadler Means YWLA Celebrates Black History Month with Teen Entrepreneur and CEO, Mikaila Ulmer

Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy kicked off Black History Month this past week with a virtual presentation by guest speaker Mikaila Ulmer, CEO of Me and the Bees Lemonade. 

Ulmer started her business as a teenager through youth entrepreneurial events as well as setting up her lemonade stand at home. In 2015, Ulmer was featured on the hit TV show Shark Tank and received a $60,000 investment. Her idea from more than 10 years ago continues to grow and is available in five flavors in more than 1,500 stores nationwide.
