MEDIA ADVISORY: Today Texas Secretary of State, Senator To Register Austin High School Students To Vote

Austin High School students will have the opportunity to register to vote as Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos and State Senator Kirk Watson visit the campus today.

Who: Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos and State Sen. Kirk Watson will speak to government students and register eligible students to vote in the March 6 Primary Election.

Take a Bow: Austin High Teacher Honored as a Theatre Educator of the Year

Austin High School teacher Annie Dragoo has been named as a 2017 K–12 Theatre Educator of the Year. 

The Texas Educational Theatre Association honored Dragoo today at an awards banquet at the TETA annual conference in Galveston. 

Dragoo has worked at Austin High School since 2004. In that time, she has co-directed the Austin High Theatre Program to the University Interscholastic League one-act play state competition four times.

The group was named state champion in 2012, and was awarded second place in 2017.  

AISD Superintendent Cruz Joins National Leaders in Panel at U.S. Conference of Mayors

Austin ISD Superintendent Paul Cruz joined national leaders in a panel at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., to speak about education and workforce development.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with a population of 30,000 or larger. Each city is represented by its mayor.

Conference on Student Mental Health

Join us 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at Anderson High School for a parenting conference focusing on student mental health.

This event is free to all Austin ISD families and child care is provided at no cost.

AISD counselors will also be on hand for private discussions with families.

In conjunction with Anderson High School, Westover Hills Church will offer additional Parenting is Weird conference sessions at a cost of $15 for the day.

If you'd like to register for childcare at the church, it is available for a fee.

AISD to Provide Transportation Districtwide for Garcia YMLA Students

As part of National School Choice Week, Austin ISD held a rally at Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy to highlight choices available to the district's students. 

The Garcia YMLA drumline kicked off the event, followed by Superintendent Paul Cruz, who announced a change at the school.

Beginning in the fall, AISD will offer transportation to any student within the district who attends the school.

"This is a different opportunity to get more students into this amazing school," Cruz said. 

AISD Makes the Choice a Little Easier

As part of Austin ISD’s National School Choice Week celebration, Superintendent Paul Cruz announced that Austin ISD will offer transportation to Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy districtwide, starting next school year.  

Districtwide transportation will allow more young men in sixth- through eighth-grade who wish to go to an all-boys school the opportunity to do so.

Students from other schools are also welcome to attend with their families.

Eastside Community STEAM Festival and College & Career Fair

Join us for a day of exciting and engaging demonstrations focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM).

Families will be able to learn about various health and community services, summer camp opportunities, and college and career resources.

Kids of all ages can enjoy face-painting, pony and train rides, climbing walls, bouncy castles, and fire trucks.

There will be live music, dance performances, food, raffle prizes and so much more fun!

This year’s STEAM Festival is brought to you through a collaboration between Austin ISD, Austin Voices for Education and Youth and the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team.

The festival will showcase programs from Allison, Brooke, Govalle, Metz, Ortega, and Zavala elementary schools, Martin Middle School and Eastside Memorial Early College High School.

This is a free event that is open to all AISD students, families, staff and community members. Everyone is welcome.
