Austin ISD Closes for Winter Break, Dec. 20–Jan. 1

Austin ISD will be closed for the winter break Wednesday, Dec. 20, through Monday, Jan. 1.

All AISD offices and schools will be closed during this period.

Regular business hours resume Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, for staff. Students return to classes on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

District Announces Schools Frozen to Transfers for 2018–19

Austin ISD has announced the names of schools that will be frozen to transfers during the 2018–19 school year.

Each year, AISD determines which schools should be frozen to transfers because they have, or are expected to have, enrollments that exceed their capacities. 

Schools to be frozen to transfers in 2018–19:

  • High schools: Akins, Bowie and McCallum

  • Middle schools: Lamar and Murchison

AISD Board of Trustees Approves New Principal Appointments

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees has appointed new principas for Andrews, Gullett, Joslin and Pillow elementary schools.

Andrews Elementary School 

The board appointed Gabriela “Gabbie” Soto to serve as the principal of Andrews. 

Soto most recently served as the administrative supervisor in the AISD middle school office. She previously worked as assistant principal at Perez Elementary School, as well as at two elementary schools in San Elizario and Clint ISDs.

AISD Receives $3.5 Million Education Innovation and Research Grant From U.S. Department of Education

Austin ISD was named one of nine national recipients of a more than $3.5 million Education Innovation and Research (EIR) Early-Phase Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The EIR grant program funds projects that develop and implement evidence-based innovations to improve student achievement for high-need students and evaluate those innovations.

Austin ISD CFO appointed to Texas Commission on Public School Finance by Speaker Straus

Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus has appointed Austin ISD’s Chief Financial Officer Nicole Conley Johnson to the Texas Commission on Public School Finance.  

The Texas Commission on Public School Finance was created in a special legislative session earlier this year. It includes members appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House. The commission will recommend ways that the next Legislature can reform and improve the state’s system of paying for public education.
