Free Back-to-School Immunization Clinic

This free, back-to-school immunization clinic is a joint effort between the city of Austin and Bethany Lutheran Church.

The clinic will be 3–6:30 p.m. July 24 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 3701 W. Slaughter Lane. 

Shots for Tots/Big Shots will administer the immunizations. 

UT Football Players Volunteer to Mulch Trees at Oak Springs Playground

This weekend will be the first volunteer day to help renovate Oak Springs Elementary School’s playground, which was set on fire in April.

The damages from the fire are estimated at about $95,000. With community support, the majority of the funds needed to return the playground to its original state have been raised. The Austin Parks Foundation awarded Oak Springs a $50,000 community grant, C3 Presents donated $25,000 and 177 donors have given $12,675 to help cover most of the expenses.

Ann Richards Art Teacher Honored Nationally, Awarded $5K

Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders art teacher Matt Smith will be celebrated in July by Honored, a nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating teachers, after being named organization's June 2017 national honoree.

Smith was selected from teachers at public, charter and private schools throughout the United States.

According to the origanization, he was chosen largely because of his innovative instruction, which has driven an expansion of the Ann Richards art program to collaborate with the STEM courses by using the campus' Makerspace.

AISD Students Outpace Peers Locally, Nationally and Internationally in AP Exam Passing Rates

According to the College Board, of the AISD students who took an Advanced Placement exam in 2016–17, 60.5 percent received a qualifying score of 3 or better, a 1.5 percent increase year-over-year. This success rate exceeds the performance of students in Texas at 46.4 percent, students in the U.S. at 57.5 percent and students internationally at 58 percent.
