Special Education 101 for PPCD Parents

Special Education 101 is a four-week training series for families of students in the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities.

The classes will be provided in English only, with the intent to offer a Spanish-only class in the near future.

The series is hosted by VELA Families and AISD. RSVP is required: 512-414-0726 (bilingual). Child care will not be provided.

    • Session 1: Orientation and Building your Parent Toolkit
    • Session 2: Understanding Your Child’s IEP (What do these terms mean?)
    • Session 3: How to Build a Team with the School, Effective Communication
    • Session 4: The ARD Meeting (What to do before, during and after)

Sessions are 8–10 a.m. Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 at the Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School, 2608 Richcreek Road.

Dual Language Community Conversation With Cheryl Urow

This conversation, moderated by national expert Cheryl Urow, will focus on ways to advocate for and support bilingualism, the latest research and best practices in the bilingual field, and the opportunities available in AISD's dual language programs. 

A light meal and children's activities will be provided.

Startup Superstars Entrepreneur Competition 2017

High school seniors at Akins, Lanier, Eastside Memorial, LBJ, Reagan and Travis high schools will be invited to participate in the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's annual Startup Superstars event.

Students who participate in the “idea, plan and pitch” contest are encouraged to come up with an idea for a new business or product, develop a business plan and then pitch the idea and plan to a panel of judges at their school on Feb. 24.

The business idea/plan has no limits and can range from taco stands to high tech to social entrepreneurship. GAHCC volunteers will be available to any participating students to assist with the creation of the business idea, plan and pitch.

Students may work alone or in a group of a maximum of three. One (group) winner will be named from each school.

A grand prize winner (group) will be selected at the finals competition at 5 p.m. March 9 at the Zach Scott Theatre at 5 p.m. The grand prize winner will receive an education scholarship donated by the GAHCC Foundation.

Student With A Graduation Goal 2017

Austin ISD welcomes sophomores, juniors and seniors, and their families to Student With a Graduation Goal, an annual one-day college information event. 

Participants can get information at a college and community fair, and can attend sessions on topics that include:

  • Essay-writing
  • Preparing for graduation
  • Transitioning to college
  • Maintaining relationships with family

Huston-Tillotson University, 900 Chicon St., hosts this year's event, which runs from 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
