District Honors Life, Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Austin ISD honored the legacy and leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. at the district’s annual celebration this morning.

The event opened with a performance from the Covington Middle School Jazz Band that included a rendition of Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call."

Spoken word performances followed from Barbara Jordan Elementary School students Bri'Asia Perkins and Efrain Gorostieta, and Artist Tyson from the Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy.

Bri'Asia also served as the event's student host, and introduced Superintendent Paul Cruz, who praised the students.

Special Education 101 is a four-week training series for families of students in the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities.

The classes will be provided in English only, with the intent to offer a Spanish-only class in the near future.

The series is hosted by VELA Families and AISD. RSVP is required: 512-414-0726 (bilingual). Child care will not be provided.

    • Session 1: Orientation and Building your Parent Toolkit
    • Session 2: Understanding Your Child’s IEP (What do these terms mean?)
    • Session 3: How to Build a Team with the School, Effective Communication
    • Session 4: The ARD Meeting (What to do before, during and after)

Sessions are 8–10 a.m. Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 at the Lucy Read Pre-K Demonstration School, 2608 Richcreek Road.
