Million Mile Month Kickoff

Austin ISD Superintendent Paul Cruz, Mayor Steve Adler, Sen. Kirk Watson and other local dignitaries, invite the community to help kick off this year’s Million Mile Month at April 1 at Austin City Hall Plaza.  

The Million Mile Month challenge allows participants to ultimately complete 1 million miles of physical activity as one community during April each year.

After the ceremony, which gets underway at 10 a.m., the Austin Parks and Recreation Department will lead guests in a walk to kick off the million miles.

Campbell Elementary students perform both modern and classic selections from the musical "Annie" May 24 at the Austin ISD Performing Art Center's Black Box Theater.

The Blue Dragon actors worked for months with kidsActing Foundation to prepare for the showcase.

The curtain goes up at 6 p.m. The PAC is located at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.

Trustees Seek Submissions for New Name of Lee Elementary School

Austin ISD's Board of Trustees invites community members to submit nominations for the renaming of Lee Elementary School, located at 3308 Hampton Road.

Nominations may be submitted online at www.austinisd.org/naming/form or in person or by mail at Carruth Administration Center Community Engagement Office, Facility Naming Team, 1111 W. Sixth St., A-230, Austin, TX 78703. 

The nomination process begins at 8 a.m. March 29 and closes at 5 p.m. April 15.

STEAM Festival at Martin Middle School

All are invited to the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team's STEAM Festival at Martin Middle School on Saturday, April 9.  The festival takes place from 10a.m. to 2p.m. throughout the campus.  The event will highlight the STEM and Fine Arts programming at all of the campuses in the vertical team.  Food, games, resources for families, and Summer Camp presentations will be offered throughout the day. 

Education Austin Hosts Citizenship Drive

Education Austin—in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin, the Equal Justice Center, NALEO Educational Fund and Univision Austin—is hosting a citizenship drive from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. April 2 at Allan Elementary School, 4900 Gonzales St.

The workshop will provide a variety of services including assistance completing N-400 citizenship applications, passport photograph sessions and individual consultations with immigration attorneys.

Access to Schools Limited During STAAR Testing

Austin ISD students are scheduled to take state exams, including the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, through May.

As has been the practice on test days in the past, the district will limit visitors’ access to schools during the week of May 9. Students will also take advanced placement exams May 2–13.

To reduce distractions and help students focus on their tests, media access to AISD campuses also will be limited during student assessment periods.
