AISD Board Approves 2016-17 Instructional Calendar

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar for the 2016-17 school year at the Dec. 14 board meeting.

This option includes a full week off for the Thanksgiving holiday, similar to other local school districts in Central Texas, in 2016.

To accommodate this change, there will be one fewer vacation day during winter break for staff. The first day of classes for students is Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, and the last day is Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Other changes include:

January's topic: Water Conservation and Sustainability

The Austin area has been in the grip of an epic drought for more than 7 years. While there has been some significant rainfall in the city during the last year and a half, rain has not fallen in the watersheds of the lakes in any manner to significantly increase lake storage. Austin’s water supply remains secure, but the drought has required dramatically increased conservation and drought response.

Austin ISD Mourns the Passing of Dr. Timy Baranoff

The Austin ISD family mourns the loss of Baranoff Elementary School namesake Dr. Timy Baranoff.

Austin ISD is enriched from Dr. Baranoff's contributions as a teacher, pioneer of early childhood education and advocate for underprivileged children.

AISD students are fortunate, too, that she was a dedicated volunteer with a passion for reading.

Dr. Baranoff's leadership and service will be long remembered, and we are proud that her legacy lives on through Baranoff Elementary School.

Public invited to view more than 1,500 student works of art

Austin ISD will celebrate Youth Art Month Jan. 31–Feb. 16 with more than 1,500 works of all kinds of art in an exhibit representing 113 elementary, middle and high schools.

In addition, 10 billboards designed by 11th-grade Travis Early College High School art student Juan Salcedo will be displayed around Austin. Govalle Elementary School fifth grade student Phoenix Tovar designed the 2016 T-shirts, which are being sold at AISD schools.
