Prospective, Current Students Invited to AISD High School Showcase on Jan. 9

Austin ISD invites area students entering and in high school to learn more about the unique opportunities available at all AISD high schools.

The AISD High School Showcase gives students and parents the opportunity to explore the many programs offered at AISD’s high school campuses. The event also allows families to speak with campus representatives who will answer questions and showcase their programs. Translators as well as community liaisons will be on hand to answer questions related to transfers. The event is free and open to the public.

Austin Family Support Cooperative Meetings are held to inform and support families of children and adults with disabilities.

The meetings combine workshops and group support to share information about issues, trends, therapies, strategies and resources that families may find useful.

Agencies supporting the Family Support Co-op include Austin ISD, Austin Travis County Integral Care, Easter Seals of Central Texas and the ARC of the Capital Area.

The Family Support Co-op meetings include presentations from speakers and support in a variety of areas.

Topics will include: preschool programs for children with disabilities, elementary issues, ADHD, support for secondary families and mental/behavioral health issues. Parents, siblings, caregivers and educators are all welcome. Spanish interpreters are available.

Light refreshments and childcare activities will be provided beginning at 6 p.m.

Gorzycki Middle School Teacher Receives First Superintendent Coin

Gorzycki Middle School teacher Cynthia Christensen today received the district's first Superintendent Coin, designed to recognize outstanding work by teachers and staff throughout the district.

Superintendent Paul Cruz delivered the coin to Christensen during her fashion and interior design class, for a project completed by students in the fall.

Using a simple pattern and some old pillowcases, Christensen's students sewed 40 dresses for children in Africa.

Board Approves Calendar for 2016–17 School Year

The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar for the 2016-17 school year at the Dec. 14 board meeting.

This option includes a full week off for the Thanksgiving holiday in 2016, similar to other school districts in Central Texas.

To accommodate this change, there will be one fewer vacation day during winter break for staff.

The first day of classes for students is Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, and the last day is Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Other changes include:
