MEDIA ADVISORY: About 50 AISD Students First to Attend Dell Medical School Health Sciences Summer Camps
White House Honors Rodriguez Elementary School Teacher as 'Champion of Change'
Maria Dominguez, a first-grade bilingual teacher at Rodriguez Elementary School, has been chosen by the White House as a Champion of Change for her efforts helping undocumented Austin ISD students apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status.
Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Certification/Re-Certification Workshop
The meeting will include a brief presentation and breakout session. HUB suppliers, subcontractors and professional service firms are encouraged to attend. Representatives from BIG Austin, the University of Texas, Texas Department of Transportation, Travis County and the city of Austin will provide information and assistance to HUB firms for certification and/or re-certification, and connect HUB contractors with opportunities.

Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Outreach and Networking Workshop
This HUB networking event will begin with a presentation outlining:
- Austin ISD HUB Program and CBOC HUB Subcommittee initiatives
- Disparity study
- Restriction on subcontractor/vendor substitutions or changes policy
- Prompt Pay payment processing
- Advances in reporting HUB participation
- Contractor outreach process
- Contractor outreach assistance available to prime contractors and construction manager at-risk firms
- Overview of ongoing and future projects
Following the presentation, there will be a networking session for HUB contractors with Austin ISD project managers and with prime contractors and construction manager at-risk firms doing business with Austin ISD. The district’s HUB consultant, and representatives from Miller Blueprint’s online plan room and BIG Austin will be available to provide free training and contractor assistance information on bonding strategies.

Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Yokum, with Austin Partners in Education
Every year, Austin Partners in Education trains more than 1,500 community volunteers to be classroom coaches and mentors throughout Austin ISD.
Karen Yokum, an electrical engineer at IBM, has volunteered with APIE as an eighth-grade math classroom coach for three years, helping students understand real-world applications of their classroom studies.
