Media Advisory: Doss Elementary Students Turnip the Lunch Options

Doss Elementary School student volunteers will be teaching other students how to have a healthier lunch this Friday during Salad Bar Day. The school recently launched a made-to-order salad bar, which includes fresh, locally grown foods.

What: School volunteers will lead other students through the salad bar during lunch.

MEDIA ADVISORY: AISD Bus Drivers to Compete in Obstacle Course Bus Roadeo

What: Austin ISD will host the 2015 Cen-Tex School Bus Roadeo.

This is an annual event that promotes bus driver safety. The roadeo consists of obstacle courses designed for conventional school buses, transit school buses and school buses for students with special needs.

“This is a great opportunity to promote bus safety with a bit of fun and competition,” said AISD Director of Transportation Kris Hafezizadeh.

Education Austin Hosts Citizenship Workshop

Education Austin is hosting a citizenship workshop from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday, April 11 at Travis High School, 1211 E. Oltorf.

The workshop will provide a variety of services including assistance completing N-400 citizenship applications, passport photograph sessions and individual consultations with immigration attorneys.

Representatives from the Equal Justice Center, University Leadership Initiative, NALEO, AFL-CIO and others will be in attendance.

Murchison MS Fine Arts Institute Festival

Join students from the Murchison MS Fine Arts Institute as they showcase their artistic talents and raise money for Arc of the Arts, a nonprofit helping adults with disabilities through fine arts.

The festival will be 6–8:30 p.m. April 27 at the AISD Performing Arts Center, 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd.

MEDIA ADVISORY: AISD's Small Green Tech Academy Named First Green Flag School in Texas

A school with meditation gardens, a goat pen and a chicken coop will be the first in Texas to be recognized by the National Wildlife Federation's Eco-Schools USA Program as a Green Flag School. Small Green Tech Academy has earned the designation, which recognizes schools for increasing environmental awareness and reducing waste and costs.
 

United Way for Greater Austin And Austin Independent School District To Make Significant Early Childhood Education Announcement That Will Impact Hundreds of Low-Income Children in Austin

On Behalf of United Way:

WHAT: United Way for Greater Austin (UWATX) will announce a significant grant to Austin Independent School District (AISD) to allow for expanded early childhood education. 

The grant will target low-income families from under-resourced neighborhoods in Austin. 

Second Annual Robot Fashion Show

Anderson and Eastside Memorial high schools host the Second Annual Robot Fashion Show from 10–11 a.m. April 4.

Join the most fashionable robots in Austin, the dedicated students who program them and special guest designer Daniel Esquivel of "Project Runway, Season 11."

Humanoid NAO robots will strut their stuff in fashions designed by University of Texas senior design students.

A percentage of Barnes & Noble's Saturday proceeds will be donated to the Anderson Robotics program.
