Statement: AISD Will Update Community About Walnut Creek Classes and Operations Tonight

AUSTIN, Texas—The Austin Independent School District has released a statement about the status of classes and operations at Walnut Creek Elementary School after an early morning fire at the campus today:

AISD continues to complete its safety and security checklist at Walnut Creek Elementary School after a fire was reported in one of its classrooms early this morning. The fire was contained to the 100 (prekindergarten) wing, but the damage from smoke necessitated the cancelation of all of the classes at the school today.

Dr. Cruz Shares Condolences with Austin High School Community

The Austin Police Department has reported that three teenagers were involved in a car accident near Barton Hills Elementary School on Friday, May 2.

At this time, the Austin Police Department has not released the names of the individuals involved in the accident.

Based on community and media reports, Paul Cruz, interim superintendent, shared the following message with the Austin High School community:

Media Advisory: News Media Access to Schools Limited During STAAR Examination Periods

Austin, Texas—Students in the Austin Independent School District are scheduled to take exams, including the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, during May.

To reduce distractions and help students focus on their tests, the news media's access to AISD campuses will be limited during the weeks of:

  • May 5 for STAAR and
  • May 12 for STAAR.

In addition, the district will administer advanced placement exams, also commonly referred to as AP exams, May 5-16.

Mendez Middle School Parent Workshop

Mendez Middle School organizes parent workshop "Open the Doors" 

The workshop will focus on children's emotional well being, communication strategies, and how to identify and over come stressful situations. 

Open the Doors is an interactive workshop in which participants are able to share information with other parents experiencing similar situations.

Oak Hill Presents School’s First Ballet Folklorico

Oak Hill Elementary School students will perform the school’s first-ever Ballet Folklorico for the student body as part of a Cinco de Mayo celebration at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5.

The event will feature 20 students—boys and girls from various grades—performing traditional Mexican folk dances to music. Reflecting the culture of Mexico, girls will wear colorful lace skirts and blouses. Boys will wear white shirts, dress pants, boots and hats.

If your answer is yes, consider participating in a confidential community needs assessment being conducted by the long term recovery agency Travis Austin Recovery Group (TARG) and the trained disaster team from World Renew starting May 9 through May 21, 2014 from 9:00 am-7:30 pm every day except Sundays.
