Media Advisory: News Media Access to Schools Limited During STAAR and TAKS Examination Periods

Austin, Texas—Students in the Austin Independent School District are scheduled to take state exams, including the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness and the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, during March, April and May.

To reduce distractions and help students focus on their tests, the news media’s access to AISD campuses will be limited during the weeks of:

LOD starts mentoring program for feeding school

The Ladies of Distinction of LBJ High School will begin a mentoring program at Garcia Middle School beginning April 7, 2014. The majority of the students at Garcia will be feeding into LBJ HS and the organization wants to start building better relationships with the students at Garcia. The program will help create connections, change lives, give girls a chance to build positive friendships, and make the transition into high school smoother. If you know of a young female student that will benefit from the LOD mentoring program, please contact Coach Kerrie Carter at kerrie.carter@austinisd.org.

Vincent Torres, president of the Board of Trustees, released the following statement about Superintendent Meria Carstarphen being named as the sole finalist to lead Atlanta Public Schools:

AISD has made significant progress under Dr. Carstarphen’s leadership during the past five years—from achieving an all-time high graduation rate to maximizing dwindling resources wisely to ensure Austin schools offer all of our students the quality education they deserve to prepare for college, career and life.

Today, I was formally announced as the sole finalist for superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. The formal vote by the Atlanta school board is scheduled for April 14.

Five years ago, I fell in love with Austin and our school district. And, for five years, it has been a privilege to serve AISD and to be a champion for public education and Austin’s children.

Together, we have achieved AISD’s best performance under the highest, toughest accountability standards in the state’s history.

AISD Seeks Nominations for Latino Community Awards

The Austin Independent School District invites the community to submit award nominations for citizens and organizations supportive of Latino students or services that enhance the academic achievement of Latino students. Three Latino Community Awards will be presented in conjunction with the District’s Latino Academic Achievement Awards event honoring outstanding students.
