The AISD community is deeply saddened and troubled to learn about today's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school. This tragedy is heartbreaking and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Newtown, Connecticut.
Austin, TX—The Austin Independent School District released the following statement from Superintendent Meria Carstarphen regarding the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.:
We are deeply saddened to learn about today’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with the school’s community and families.
Austin, Texas—Students and their families will come together with administrators and counselors at Eastside Memorial High School to participate in 30-minute individual meetings to discuss and plan for students’ lives after high school. This is the first time the school has offered the campus-wide individual meetings to help graduating students as they prepare for their transition into the adult world.
Today, the administration of the Austin Independent School District released its response to a Texas Civil Rights Project report on school funding.
Austin, TX—Travis Heights Elementary School, 2010 Alameda Drive, will host a press conference on at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 to discuss the school’s decision to submit an application to become the first campus-based, in-district charter in the district’s history. If accepted, the change could alter the landscape of public education in Austin.
This week, Austin ISD invites families and community members to two community meetings regarding potential bond projects.
These projects are former 2013-14 Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendations (AAFRs) that have been referred to the Citizens’ Bond Advisory Committee for possible inclusion in the scope of the work for the next bond program.
The meetings are part of AISD’s ongoing effort to gather input and feedback from the public.
Child care and interpretation services will be provided at the meetings.
Recently, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's (GAHCC) Educational Team announced it would provide funding and support to Cunningham Elementary School's MicroSociety Program—a nationwide after school program that prepares students for real-world experiences.
In September, the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) released a report about school funding. The administration has reviewed the claims made by TCRP and analyzed their findings in its report.
As a result, the administration has issued a response to the claims made in TCRP's report.

Parents and students are invited to attend a special assembly at Pickle Elementary School, 1101 Wheatley Avenue, on Thursday, Dec. 20 to hear a presentation from Ambassador Antonio "Tony" Garza, Jr., former ambassador to Mexico. The assembly begins at 10 a.m. with Ambassador Garza speaking to Penguin scholars about the importance of education.
Pickle Elementary Schools hosts the St. John Community Holiday Celebration on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The event begins in the cafeteria at 6 p.m. where community members are invited to bring a dish to share with neighbors for the pot-luck dinner. A Posada will take place in the neighborhood immediately after the dinner.
