School of Choice Fair

On Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 9 a.m. to noon, Kealing Middle School will host AISD's School of Choice Fair. Students and parents will have the opportunity to learn about other academic programs offered to middle and high school students.

Austin ISD Superintendent to Present State of the District

Austin, TX—Austin Independent School District Superintendent Meria Carstarphen presents the State of the District address, in which she will review the 2010-11 annual report, discuss district priorities and provide an overview of plans for AISD's future.

The event is by invitation only. It will be streamed live at www.austinisd.org.

Board Adopts Facility Master Plan Framework

Austin, TX—Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees adopted the Facility Master Plan (FMP) framework to enable the district to establish a recurring facilities process to improve the district's academic performance and facilities utilization.

The board will decide on the Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendations (AAFRs) for school year 2012-2013 at its Dec. 12 regular board meeting. If the board approves the recommendations in December, the administration would begin planning and implementation for the next school year.

Board of Trustees Supports Administration’s Stance on STAAR

 

Since legislation passed requiring districts across the state to adopt the new STAAR testing program, AISD has been working diligently to ensure students’ success on the more rigorous exams.

 

From providing training and resources for staff, to developing curriculum guides that align learning activities with assessment preparation, the district remains dedicated to student achievement.

 

During the Regular Board Meeting on November 21, the Board of Trustees adopted the following items related to STAAR:

 

Dr. Carstarphen Invites You to Watch the State of the District Address - Nov. 30

Superintendent Meria Carstarphen invites AISD staff and the community to watch live as she presents the 2011 State of the District Address from the new McCallum Arts Center.

A reflection and celebration of the past year's successes and an overview of where the district is heading, the presentation will stream online through AISD's website at https://www.austinisd.org/sod (website will go live this week).

AISD Schools Honored for Going Green

Each year, the Good Sports Always Recycle review committee honors schools that are going green by recycling and collecting rainwater and composting and maintaining native garden beds.

This year, Bryker Woods and Summitt elementary schools were named the winners of the 2011 Good Sports Always Recycle Award for their outstanding campus recycling, conservation and beautification initiatives. Winning schools received $500 to improve their campus environmental efforts and were recognized on the field at the Texas vs. Kansas State Game Nov. 19.

Sunset Valley Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Sunset Valley Elementary will be celebrating their 40th anniversary by hosting two ceremonies on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. The first ceremony will begin at promptly at 9:00 a.m. and the second will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Both events will be held at the campus located at 3000 Jones Rd. and will include a history of the school dating back to the 1970s, when the school first began. There will also be appearances by former principals and music performed by former students. Sunset Valley Elementary is asking that all alumni please stop by and join in on the festivities.

LASA to Host Talk on Teen Self Esteem and Healthy Eating - Nov. 29

The AISD Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) High School will host "Support Self Esteem, Healthy Eating, and Positive Image at Home,” a presentation by counselor Valerie Savage, C.P.A., M.A., LPC-Intern, Tues., Nov. 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Carver Library, 1161 Angelina. The event, LASA’s second parenting program of the year, is free and open to the public.
