Four Austin Students Earn Science Awards at International Competition

Five "Best of Fair" High School division projects from the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival advanced to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles earlier this month, and resulted in awards for four AISD students.

Of the five "Best of Fair" projects from the AERSF, Austin Independent School District students won the following:

Fundraiser Planned to Benefit Homeless Students and Families

A fundraiser to benefit CapCityKids will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Antone's, located at 213 W. 5th Street. The fundraiser will feature music and special guest presentations. There is a $10 cover charge.

For more than six years, CapCityKids, a non-profit organization, has provided significant funding and volunteer support to the AISD Project HELP (Homeless Education and Learning Program) in an effort to ensure students and families experiencing homelessness have what they need in order to survive and be successful in school.

Crockett High School Recognized for Yearbook Excellence

The Crockett High School yearbook staff, and adviser Donna Woodard  have been honored for  accomplishments in yearbook design and coverage by Balfour Yearbooks.  The Crockett yearbook, The Texan, is featured in the 25th edition of Yearbook.

For their outstanding yearbook achievement, Balfour features approximately three percent of yearbook staffs in YearbookYearbook.

Austin High Students Earn Accolades for Multimedia Presentations

Students from Austin High School have received numerous awards for their work in the areas of photography, graphic design, and multimedia/video production.

The students are winners in the Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau Graphic Design, Photography and Multimedia Contest. The students were recently honored at the Austin Convention and Visitor's Bureau Luncheon, where they each received $500 scholarship checks presented by Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell.

Austin School District Earns Budget Award

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded the Austin Independent School District its Certificate of Excellence (COE) in Financial Reporting Award for the fiscal year that ended August 31, 2010.

To earn this award, the School District submitted its Budget for a rigorous review, based on ASBO's stringent criteria.
The COE award confirms the School District's commitment to financial accountability and transparency.

High School Hospitality Programs Pay Tribute to Business Partners

The Hospitality Programs at Travis and Bowie High Schools will honor and recognize their business partners at the monthly Austin Hotel and Lodging Association meeting at noon on Wednesday, May 18, at the Austin Marriott South, located at 4415 S. I. H. 35.

The Hyatt Regency will be recognized for its 10-year partnership with Travis Hospitality, and Barton Creek Resort will be recognized for its 15-year partnership with the Bowie hospitality program. Both properties have hosted internship programs that have successfully trained hundreds of students.

Fourteen Students to be Honored during Scholarship Event Friday

Twelve students from Lanier High School and two students from Reagan High School will be honored Friday, May 20, at a scholarship presentation ceremony at

6:30 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 11301 Domain Drive.The Moody Foundation will be awarding $84,000 in scholarship money to these 14 students. The students were selected based on essay submissions.

Edmund R. Oropez, Associate Superintendent of High Schools, will be the guest speaker. The following is the list of scholarship recipients:

Lanier Teacher Named a Siemens Star

Lanier High School science teacher Hamid Samia has been chosen as one of 20 Siemens Teachers As Researchers – STARs—for 2011.

Selected from more than 200 applicants, these educators will work with the nation's top scientists on short-term projects focused on the most current and innovative science research happening today.

Samia will spend two weeks at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy's largest science and energy laboratory, working on research projects with cutting-edge scientists and researchers.
