Every year librarians make sure they have the most current and favorite books on their shelves, and we’re inviting our community to support their efforts through the Austin ISD Library Fund. 

Why it matters: Reading is a key skill for success academically, and we want our students to be excited and engaged when finding new books. Having a diverse library collection can ensure our students have more options to choose from and continue reading for joy. 

“Our challenge is to listen to our kids and listen to what they want,” said Sarah Ruttan, Ridgetop Elementary School librarian and member of the Austin ISD Library Fund Committee. “Listen to what our teachers want, what they're using in the classroom. And then make sure that we're putting on the shelf books that represent our school communities as well.” 

Let’s go back:  The Austin ISD fund was created during the pandemic when librarians lost a lot of books that students took home, and it became a challenge to replace them.

• Two years ago, the committee of librarians started to raise funds to award grants to the librarians who applied. 
• The grants focus on collection development and library programming.

The details: This year’s goal is to raise $2,500 districtwide to support librarians in their efforts to fill their shelves. The librarians work with Austin Ed Fund on the grant selection process and the $2,500 allows the group to give five grants to different librarians in the district that apply for the grants.

Cada año los bibliotecarios procuran tener los libros favoritos y más recientes en sus estantes, y estamos invitando a nuestra comunidad a apoyar sus esfuerzos a través del Fondo de Bibliotecas del Austin ISD.

Por qué es importante: Leer es una destreza fundamental para el éxito académico y queremos que nuestros estudiantes estén emocionados y motivados al encontrar libros nuevos. Tener una colección diversa en la biblioteca puede garantizar que nuestros estudiantes tengan más opciones de las cuales elegir y sigan leyendo por placer.

"Nuestro reto es escuchar a nuestros niños y escuchar lo que quieren", dijo Sarah Ruttan, bibliotecaria de la Escuela Primaria Ridgetop y miembro del Comité del Fondo de Bibliotecas del Austin ISD. "Escuchar lo que quieren nuestros maestros, lo que están usando en el salón de clases. Y luego asegurarnos de poner en el estante libros que también representen a nuestras comunidades escolares".

Remontémonos al pasado: El fondo del AISD se creó durante la pandemia, cuando los bibliotecarios perdieron muchos libros que los estudiantes se llevaron a casa, y reemplazarlos se convirtió en un reto.

• Hace dos años, el comité de bibliotecarios comenzó a recaudar fondos para darles subvenciones a los bibliotecarios que las solicitaran.
• Las subvenciones se enfocan principalmente en la creación de colecciones y programas para la biblioteca.

Los detalles: La meta de este año es recaudar $2,500 de todo el distrito para apoyar a los bibliotecarios en sus esfuerzos por llenar sus estantes. Los bibliotecarios trabajan con Austin Ed Fund en el proceso de selección de subvenciones y los $2,500 le permiten al grupo darles cinco subvenciones a diferentes bibliotecarios del distrito que las soliciten.

"Este fondo ayuda a poner libros y recursos en manos de los estudiantes de todo el distrito", dijo Heather Stephens, bibliotecaria de la Escuela Primaria Walnut Creek.
