Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process for helping children and adults develop fundamental skills for life effectiveness. SEL teaches the skills we all need to handle ourselves, our relationships, and our work effectively and ethically. These skills include:
- recognizing and managing our emotions,
- developing caring and concern for others,
- establishing positive relationships,
- making responsible decisions, and
- handling challenging situations constructively and ethically.
Skills and concepts are integrated in academic lessons and practiced to enhance the climate of the school. Out-of-school time providers and parents reinforce SEL skills as well.
In Austin ISD, SEL goes beyond the boardroom or even the classroom into the living room. SEL At-Home is an Austin ISD SEL site dedicated to providing parents/caregivers and students access to SEL-related enrichment activities, resources, self-care and mindful practices and more!
In Austin ISD, we believe that SEL is at the heart of equity-centered systems and structures. In an effort to grow this belief into a reality, the SEL department has defined equity-centered SEL, adopted from CASEL's transformative SEL definition, and is working hard to create brave, respectful, collaborative spaces to support all students, staff, families and communities throughout our district.
The SEL department includes the following teams:
Austin ISD is proud to be recognized as a leader in urban education and one of the first districts in the nation to commit to the development of the whole child by incorporating social and emotional learning.
