The Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved new principal appointments for Houston and Langford elementary schools at its May 18 regular voting meeting.
Houston Elementary School
The board appointed Alberto Alonso to serve as the principal of Houston Elementary School.
Alonso has served as the interim principal of Houston this year. He was previously the assistant principal of Lively Middle School for three years and has 17 years of education experience, all of which have been in Austin ISD. He began his career as a bilingual special education teacher.
"It is such an honor to lead as a principal with gratitude, humility and respect to ensure that all students at Josephine Houston Elementary School get the same opportunity to pursue success," Alonso said. "Our students, staff and families deserve champion leadership that creates change by recognizing collaboration and sharing its development and implementation."
Alonso has a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in educational leadership from Concordia University.
Langford Elementary School
The board appointed Martha Castillo to serve as principal of Langford Elementary School.
Castillo most recently served as principal of Metz Elementary School, a position she has held since 2012. She previously worked as assistant principal and bilingual teacher within Austin ISD and has 21 years of experience in education.
"I am extremely happy for the opportunity to serve the Langford community," Castillo said. "I look forward to working with everyone and am committed to providing an exceptional learning environment in which every student can succeed."
Castillo has a bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a master's degree in school administration from Concordia University.
