Austin ISD Celebrates Juneteenth in Annual Parade

Austin ISD invites the community to join faculty, staff, students and their families to march in the annual Juneteenth Historical Parade.  

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.

What: Austin ISD faculty, staff, students and their families will be part of the annual Juneteenth Historical Parade, and the District All-Star Marching Band will perform.

When: Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m.-noon.

Where: Participants will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the staging area at Comal Street and East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will proceed down Chicon Street and Rosewood Avenue to Rosewood Park, 2300 Rosewood Ave.

Volunteers who want to help decorate vehicles should meet at 8 a.m. at Rising Star Baptist Church, 1710 E. 20th St.

The celebration includes a pageant, 2K Freedom Run/Walk, float contest and more. More details on the Juneteenth Festival are available online

The parade route is roughly 1.4 miles and it is highly suggested that attendees wear comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sunscreen.
