AISD names Gilbert Hicks Associate Superintendent for Schools

Austin, TX—Tonight, the Austin Independent School District's Board of Trustees approved naming Gilbert Hicks as the new associate superintendent for schools, effective July1.

Since 2007, Hicks has served as principal of Overton Elementary school, where he developed school-wide plans to dramatically increase student achievement in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Under Hicks' leadership, Overton earned a recognized rating from the Texas Education Agency. Hicks also has served as principal for Oak Springs and Winn elementary schools and as assistant principal at LBJ High School.

"Gilbert Hicks has been a tremendous asset to our district, implementing successful academic plans," Paul Cruz, chief schools officer, said. "We are pleased he has accepted this new role as we work to prepare our students to be ready for college, career and life."

In his new role, Hicks will provide support to Cruz and work closely with the associate superintendents in the schools office.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to further help the district fulfill its mission as a public education institution to serve all students," Hicks said. "I look forward to ensuring a school culture that promotes long-range, continuous improvement."
