The group Engaging our Community for College Readiness will host a special presentation at Webb Middle School to help the community learn how they can influence the success of all chidren. Dr. Octavius will serve as keynote speaker at the event.
Bishop was an offensive lineman on the football team at the University of Texas at Austin before playing with the NFL's Chicago Bears. After retiring from professional football, Bishop served as an example to the community by returning to the University of Texas to earn both his bachelor's and master's degree in the field of social work. He later went on to earn a Ph.D in Neuropsychology and currently teaches classes at Austin Community College. Bishop has served as a Male Involvement Program Coordinator at five Austin area high schools where he works with at-risk populations for Communities in Schools, a non-profit organization focused on dropout prevention.
The event will close with a message from acoustic hip hop artist Saul Paul. The event will be an opportunity for families and the community to learn how they can encourage student success.
The presentation begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Webb Middle School, 601 E. St. Johns Ave., and includes a Thanksgiving lunch for families.
