Juneteenth Holiday

Juneteenth, now more than 155 years old, is celebrated on June 19 to honor the liberation of African Americans from slavery in the United States. The holiday’s name comes from blending “June” and “nineteenth.” On this day in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing the news that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, history, and community.

Memorial Day Holiday

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. It is the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States.

Student & Staff Holiday / Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking Fast,” is celebrated at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, which is observed according to the lunar calendar. During Ramadan, practicing Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset each day. When the month concludes, many families and communities celebrate by visiting loved ones, exchanging gifts and preparing special foods and sweets that are closely associated with the holiday.

Student / Staff Holiday / Dolores Huerta Day

We are mindful of the serious allegations involving César Chávez and recognize the significant weight these reports carry for many in our community. While we hold space for these difficult accounts, we remain committed to honoring the foundational impact of the labor leaders and civil rights activists who have shaped our nation. In this spirit, Austin ISD will continue to recognize Dolores Huerta Day on March 31, 2026, as a student and staff holiday with all schools and offices closed.
