Austin Voices Announces $2.5 Million Grant to Support AISD Schools

The U.S. Department of Education is awarding Austin Voices for Education and Youth nearly $2.5 million to create community schools in AISD schools.

A new family resource center, to help stabilize and support at-risk families, will open at Lanier High School. The center will include family support services and a full range of adult education classes. The grant will also fund services and classes at Burnet Middle School and Cook and Wooldridge elementary schools.

Webb Middle School is hosting Austin Energy's fifth annual Community Connection event, featuring more than 50 vendors with information about social services, as well as on-site health screening.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their resume and learn about job opportunities.

Participants may also discover ways to lower monthly energy bills through the Customer Assistance Program Offered by the city of Austin.

AISD Programs Receive Continued Support in City Budget

Austin ISD’s parent support specialists, the Prime Time after-school program and AISD Channel 22 will receive funding in the City of Austin’s 2015-16 budget.

The city funds will continue to help support the district’s community engagement and social service initiatives at a critical time when AISD estimates it will send $273 million to the state through the recapture or “Robin Hood” program this year.

Crockett High School Chosen as one of 10 National Models by MarylandCan

A nonprofit organization in Baltimore, MarylandCan, chose 10 high schools in the U.S. for Baltimore schools to model themselves after. Austin ISD’s Crockett High School was among them.

“Across the country, there are non-entrance-criteria public high schools proving that poverty doesn’t have to dictate outcomes. There’s so much we can learn from these success stories,” stated the Baltimore Opportunity Schools Vol. 2 report.

AISD Student Scores Exceed State, National Averages on SAT

Students in Austin ISD continue to earn higher overall scores on the SAT compared with their counterparts across the state and nation, according to the College Board.

“Preparing Austin students to graduate college-ready is among our top priorities at AISD,” Superintendent Paul Cruz said. “We continue to surpass the state and national averages and are proud of our students and staff for their continued hard work.”
