Media Advisory: Austin ISD Promotes Literacy During International Read for the Record Day Oct. 21

AUSTIN, Texas—Austin ISD will be promoting reading throughout its elementary schools during International Read for the Record Day.

What: Interim Superintendent Paul Cruz will read “Bunny Cakes,” by Rosemary Wells to bilingual kindergarteners.

When: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21

Read for the Record is an event that mobilizes children and adults to participate in a shared reading experience.

The goal of the event is to draw attention to the importance of literacy by highlighting reading.

On Oct. 21, people nationwide will unite to read the children’s book Bunny Cakes by bestselling author and illustrator Rosemary Wells.

Sims Youth Pave the Road to Zero Waste

AUSTIN—Keep Austin Beautiful, in partnership with Austin Resource Recovery and the Bleed Orange Live Green initiative, awarded Austin ISD’s Mary Jane Sims Elementary as the 2014 Zero-Waste Champions.

The award recognizes a local Austin school each year for outstanding efforts to reduce waste and raise awareness on campus about the City of Austin's Zero Waste goal, which aims to decrease the amount of trash sent to landfills by 90 percent by the year 2040.

AISD Celebrates Bus Safety Oct. 20–24

The Austin Independent School District willjoin other school districts and transporting agencies throughout the nation in celebrating the importance of National School Bus Safety and Transportation Employees Appreciation Week Oct. 20–24.

This year’s theme, “At my Stop, you Stop” reminds motorists to stop when a school bus has its red warning lights flashing for students to load and unload.
