Media Advisory: News Media Access to Schools Limited During Final Week of Classes, Examinations

Austin, Texas—The Austin Independent School District is preparing for the end of the school year and graduation ceremonies next week.

The last day of classes for AISD’s more than 120 schools is Thursday, June 5. To reduce distractions and help students focus on their end-of-the-year commitments and final examinations, the news media’s access to campuses may be limited during the week of May 30. The district also will continue to limit visitors’ access to schools during student assessment periods.

AISD Honors Top Talent at Salute

Salute, co-hosted by AISD and Austin Partners in Education, is the annual event that recognizes some of the district's outstanding team members for their dedication to student excellence and achievement in our schools.

At the event last night, May 29, held at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, AISD honored the Teacher of the Year, Classified Staff of the Year, Principal of the Year, Librarian of the Year, Counselor of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year and APIE Hall of Fame award winner.

AISD Adopts Summer Efficiency Schedule for Six Weeks to Save Energy

Beginning June 23 and ending Aug. 8, Austin ISD will operate on a summer efficiency schedule to reduce energy costs. The district's average savings from the summer efficiency program is about $486,000.

All schools and offices will adopt a four-day week during this time. Business hours will be 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday–Thursday. All district and campus offices will be closed on Fridays.

The district also will be closed for one week from Monday, June 30, through Friday, July 4. All AISD offices and schools will be closed during this period.

AISD honors AVID graduates

More than 200 AVID seniors received their honor cords this morning, May 29, in a special ceremony at the Delco Activity Center.

Several seniors spoke at the second annual ceremony about their experiences in AISD's AVID program—Advancement Via Individual Determination—which aims to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary work.

AVID students from throughout the district attended to congratulate the seniors on their accomplishments.

Media Advisory: AISD Pilots Bus Stop-arm Camera Program to Track Number of Motorists Improperly Passing School Buses

Austin, Texas—Austin ISD has recorded an average of 60 violations of motorists improperly passing school buses each day since launching its bus stop-arm camera pilot program with 30 of the district’s more than 500 buses.

What: Kris Hafezizadeh, transportation director, and Eric Mendez, AISD’s police chief, will demonstrate how the district’s bus stop-arm cameras operate, provide an update about the violations recorded to date and offer bus safety reminders for Austin drivers.

Class of 2014: AISD Graduation Ceremonies Celebrate School and Student Achievement

AUSTIN, Texas—The Austin Independent School District will celebrate school and student achievements—including the millions of dollars in scholarships graduates have earned for college—during graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2014 June 3-7.

AISD's graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 82.5 percent. Since 2008, graduation rates among AISD's high school seniors have risen steadily from 74.3 percent.
