AISD is providing an updated FAQ to employees that clarifies section three of the criteria in the initial FAQ (question 9, page 3), which was distributed Aug. 27. Specifically, children are included in the list of relationships that cannot qualify for the expanded health insurance benefits the district will offer.

Today is the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which he delivered on August 28, 1963 to more than 200,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The speech is considered one of the most powerful of the 20th Century and marked a defining moment in the civil rights movement.
Before I go to bed tonight, I am mindful that today is Lyndon Baines Johnson’s birthday. LBJ inspires me because he was an education-focused, civil rights champion. Over Memorial Day weekend, I took my parents out to LBJ State Park and toured his hometown and the park to learn more about his legacy. My parents still live in Selma, Alabama, where I grew up–a city that is still immersed in civil rights struggles. I remember that every day as I take responsibility for addressing inequalities in education here in Austin.

The Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee (ESAC) Conference will meet Saturday Oct. 5. The conference is designed to educate and raise awareness of sustainability and environmental stewardship within the AISD community. The program will include a key note speaker and lectures/panel discussions. The audience will consist primarily of high school students, teachers and AISD staff.
