Austin ISD teachers can take advantage of one of the largest professional development summits for reading and spelling when it comes to Austin this summer.
Out of many large cities across the country, Austin was chosen as the site for the 2013 National Language Essential for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Summit hosted by Cambium Learning Group. The annual summit is a professional development program that features nationally recognized trainers in the areas of reading, writing and spelling and provides teachers a comprehensive teaching approach, focusing on evidence-based literacy instruction and the structure of the English language. This year's summit will be June 26-28 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Austin.
For the past three years, Austin ISD has provided opportunites for all teachers to attend the LETRS training modules. Currently more than 800 teachers ranging from early childhood to high school have attended. The LETRS Summit is three days of sessions and networking that will expand participants’ knowledge of the science behind literacy, language acquisition, reading and writing.
The Response to Intervention Department will offer a full registration scholarship for all administrators interested in attending the summit. In addition, the scholarship is offered to each campus for up to two teachers or specialists.
