Dear Austin ISD community,
The Austin ISD Board of Trustees is excited to announce that we have chosen Matias Segura as the lone finalist for the position of AISD Superintendent. The decision was made unanimously during the December 14 meeting.
After the chance to work together for almost a year, we feel confident that Mr. Segura will be a strong leader for our district – someone who is deeply rooted and deeply invested in our community, who brings a strong set of skills to the work, and who is committed to leading in alignment with our community’s values and our students’ needs. We thank everyone in the Austin ISD community who has taken the time to share their thoughts about this important decision with the trustees. Your input has been deeply valuable as we have considered this important choice.
Texas law requires a waiting period of at least 21 days before a lone finalist for superintendent may enter into an employment contract with a Texas district. We anticipate voting on a contract at our regularly scheduled voting meeting on January 25. Before that vote, the board will host community events to offer opportunities for people to ask questions of Mr. Segura, and opportunities for Mr. Segura to share his vision for the district with the Austin ISD community.
Mr. Segura has served as Interim Superintendent of Austin ISD since January 3, 2023. During that time, he has worked collaboratively with the board to increase staff hiring and retention – a key element for student success, to begin improving systems and supports for students who receive special education services, to thoughtfully navigate the district’s monitoring agreement with the Texas Education Agency, to explore data-driven approaches for improving and monitoring student outcomes, to strengthen partnerships with local organizations and local governments, and to lead with transparency, joy, and a deep love for Austin ISD and our students, staff, and families.
We are excited about all that he brings, and even more excited about who he is. Mr. Segura is a graduate of Austin ISD, the son of a long-time Austin ISD teacher, and the father of two Austin ISD students. He has worked for the district since 2017, serving as chief of operations before he became interim superintendent. We have seen Mr. Segura jump into the work with curiosity, passion, and a recognition of both his strengths and what he does not yet know. And we have seen him lead with transparency, equity, strategy, kindness, and a deep faith that great things are possible for Austin ISD’s students, staff, and schools.
We look forward to the work ahead – using the strengths of Mr. Segura, our staff, our families and students, the board of trustees and this community to make Austin ISD all that we believe and know it can be.

Estamos entusiasmados con todo lo que aporta, y aún más entusiasmados con quién es. El Sr. Segura es graduado del Austin ISD, hijo de un maestro por muchos años del Austin ISD y padre de dos estudiantes del Austin ISD. Ha trabajado para el distrito desde 2017, sirviendo como jefe de operaciones antes de convertirse en superintendente interino. Hemos visto al Sr. Segura lanzarse al trabajo con curiosidad, pasión y un reconocimiento tanto de sus fortalezas como de lo que aún no sabe. Y lo hemos visto liderar con transparencia, equidad, estrategia, amabilidad y una profunda fe en que grandes cosas son posibles para los estudiantes, el personal y las escuelas del Austin ISD.
