From the Superintendent: Clarifying Our Vision

Dear Community Members,

We have a historic and unprecedented opportunity to create modernized 21st-century learning spaces for all our students. The Facility Master Plan on which the bond was built provides a long-range, comprehensive plan to modernize all schools.

The projects outlined in the bond and the FMP are the first step toward creating schools that our teachers, students, and parents can be proud to attend.

I realize the excitement and eagerness to get to work, coupled with aggressive project timelines, have created misunderstandings about the future of some of our schools and the process for parent and community engagement. I accept responsibility, and I apologize for the confusion.

We always strive to do the best for our community. Please know that I’m working with my staff and stakeholders to make things right so that our focus will continue to be on our collective vision—to reinvent the urban school experience and create modernized 21st-century learning spaces for our students.

To that end, we are listening and will work with you to modify our timelines and engagement process. Like you, I want our new modernized learning spaces sooner than later, and I believe we want to get back to our focus on our vision.

At the end of the day, I know we all love Austin, and, working together, we will provide our students—the future of Austin—with learning environments where they can demonstrate their passion for learning.
