The planning committee for a potential new south Austin magnet program is looking for input and guidance during community information sessions in April.
The public will have multiple opportunities to share perspectives with the committee, tasked with establishing magnet program visions and curriculum/instruction needs for a potential new south magnet program.
The meetings are come-and-go meetings, allowing community members to arrive at any time during the meeting and stay as long as they would like. The meeting format will ensure all attendees receive the same information regardless of arrival time.
- The first session is 8 to 11 a.m. April 16 at the Covington Middle School cafeteria.
- The second community session is slated for 4 to 7 p.m. April 28 at the Mendez Middle School cafeteria.
Community members will have the opportunity to review the program proposals and will asked to complete surveys to further inform the committee’s work.
Currently, no magnet programs exist in South Austin high schools, including Akins, Austin, Bowie, Crockett, and Travis.
District data demonstrates that a slight majority of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) student applicants and enrollees are of the south AISD community.
LASA, at its current location at LBJ High School, has reached capacity.
Covington Middle School is located at 3700 Convict Hill Rd. Mendez Middle School is located at 5106 Village Square Dr.

El comité de planeación para un nuevo programa imán o magnet en el sur de Austin busca la opinión y guía de la comunidad e invita a dos sesiones informativas en abril.
El público tendrá dos oportunidades de compartir su perspectiva con el comité, cuya tarea es establecer tanto la visión del nuevo programa como las necesidades en materia de currículo e instrucción.
La primera reunión es el sábado de 8 a 11 a.m. en la cafetería de Covington MS. La segunda está programada para el jueves 28 de abril de 4 a 7 p.m. en la cafetería de Mendez MS. Estas sesiones informativas son para asistir en cualquier momento y permanecer el tiempo que cada participante desee.
Actualmente, no hay programas imán en las preparatorias del sur de Austin: Akins, Austin, Bowie, Crockett o Travis.
