Walnut Creek Resumes Regular Schedule Tuesday

District has completed safety and security checklist to prepare for students’ return

After today’s early morning fire, AISD has completed its safety and security checklist and has determined that classes and operations at Walnut Creek Elementary School will resume their regular schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6.

Interim Superintendent Paul Cruz walked through the campus with Principal Paul Perez this afternoon. The district determined—based upon input from the Austin Fire Department and structural, mechanical and electrical (power), air quality and safety systems staff members and consultants—that the building is safe for the return of the school’s students.

The fire was contained to the 100 (prekindergarten) wing and the district has closed the area to classes and campus traffic. Students who attend classes in the 100 wing will be reassigned other areas at the school.

The student drop-off point at the campus remains in the east parking lot. The bus drop-off point will be at the school cafeteria. The district is asking all students to enter the school through the cafeteria.

Instruction, testing and other school activities will proceed as scheduled, unless otherwise notified.

The district will provide counselors who will be available to speak with children in class or one-on-one throughout the day.

AISD would like to thank and commend the district’s staff members and the Austin Fire Department for their swift and professional response throughout the day.
