Walnut Creek Elementary School held its "Family Literacy Day at Little Walnut Creek Library" Saturday, Feb. 11. More than 20 parents registered for Austin Publlic Library cards and received gift cards provided by HEB and the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Hispanic Austin Leadership Education Team.
Parent Support Specialists also introduced families to Maestro en casa, an English-language immersion and immigrant integration program. The home study, life skills program is designed to help AISD families learn basic English language vocabulary to improve their understanding of the public education system in Austin.
The Department of Public Relations and Multicultural Outreach and the Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together (MATT) Foundation plan to enroll 1,750 Spanish-speaking parents to the program this school semester.
Congratulations to Walnut Creek Parent Support Specialist Mycah Arellano for a great event. And special thanks to the Hispanic Austin Leadership Education Team for their leadership and support. Click here, for pictures of the event.
