Austin ISD extends pre-K schedule, adds teacher assistants
Families can expect more out of Austin ISD’s prekindergarten program for four year olds this school year with 45 minutes of additional instruction. “The extra 45 minutes means additional time for high-quality programming; hands-on learning experiences, exposure to literacy and learning through play,” said Nikki Demby, director of early learning.
District Presents $1.73 Billion Budget to Trustees
Austin ISD’s $1.73 billion budget for 2021-22 includes some increases for critical areas, such as $137 million for special education and $1.5 million for additional transportation routes, as well as funds to help the district address mental health and academic needs following the pandemic.

Middle schoolers get a peek of early college
Most kids don’t make their college decisions until their senior years. Austin ISD eighth graders, though, are getting to choose colleges when they pick their high schools in what’s called the Early College High School program.
Breaking down the budget cuts
District leaders are proposing a balanced budget for the 2022-23 school year, including a reduction of 632 positions to close our $87 million deficit. There’s been some confusion about how we ended up with 632 positions when earlier budget discussions focused on cutting 250 positions from Central Office.
