The Austin ISD Board of Trustees will host a press conference this afternoon to address the district’s legislative priorities and the impact of certain bills on the community.
What: Trustees will address the following legislative bills:
- House Bill 3270 and the companion bill Senate Bill 1365 would drastically expand the powers of the Commissioner of Education and erode local control.
- House Bill 3979 and companion bill Senate Bill 2202 are framed around civic education; the details would limit the ability of a school community to decide what is best for its students, such as partnering with industry partners like Dell, 4H STEM and agriculture programs, and firefighter academies.
- House Bill 1468 would provide school districts an option to create a virtual school for families for the next school year. Austin ISD recognizes that for some families, a virtual option may be the option they need for next year as we emerge from the pandemic.
Who: AISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde, Board President Geronimo Rodriguez, Trustee Lynn Boswell, Trustee Arati Singh, Trustee Yasmin Wagner, and Eastside Memorial Early College High School Principal Miguel Garcia.
When: 2:30 p.m, Monday, May 10.
Where: Eastside Memorial ECHS Library, 1012 Arthur Stiles Road.
