AISD Names Nicholas Dellas the 2014 High School Teacher of the Year

Nicholas Dellas is science department manager at LBJ Early College High School. He has a master’s degree in kinesiology with a specialization in exercise physiology from the University of Texas at Austin, and a bachelor’s degree in health science with an emphasis in athletic training from Grand Valley State University.

"During my youth, becoming a teacher was not on my list of probable career choices," Dellas said. "However, while I was attending The University of Texas at Austin and working in the Fitness Institute of Texas, I began to realize that I was destined for a life in the classroom."

At LBJ Early College High School, Dellas started courses such as Anatomy and Physiology, which has gone from one small class to two to three classes full of enthusiastic students. His methodical approach to identifying areas where students needed one-on-one tutoring, and then making sure they get it, has resulted in dramatic improvements in test scores at the school.

"Five years ago, my students and I created the 'Dellas Senior Wall' in my classroom," he said. "Each graduating class of seniors has its own section of wall in my classroom to write messages to future LBJ Jaguars around an original piece of artwork painted by one of our graduates. Students love the opportunity to leave a piece of themselves behind, while I like the daily reminder of the reason I am at LBJ."

Dellas said he attends many of the school’s academic and fine art events, which allows him to connect with my students outside of my classroom.

"I also chaperone field trips and college visits, and I am always available for tutoring for any student, not just my own," he said. "Creating strong bonds with students has helped me have a positive effect on countless LBJ students over the years."
