This Friday, Travis High School's culinary arts students will join the ranks of other AISD students who are building relationship in their communities by hosting Peace Through Pie celebrations. 

More than 200 people are expected to attend the second annual Peace Through Pie event at Travis, which will include desserts provided by the school’s culinary students and musical performances from the school’s mariachi and guitar programs. Student artwork will also be on display during the reception. This is the second event of this nature to take place in the district this year. On Saturday, Jan. 19, students at Mathews Elementary School also hosted a Peace Through Pie event in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Like the actions called on by King, the Peace Through Pie socials aim to encourage unity amidst diversity.

A representative from the office of Texas State Rep. Dawnna Dukes will deliver a special proclamation at the Peace Through Pie celebration—part of a national movement that aims to cultivate peace and bring diverse community groups together through food and conversation.  Also attending the event will be Hoover Alexander of Hoover’s Cooking, Phil Korshak of local favorite Home Slice Pizza and Luanne Stovall, co-creator and founder of Peace Through Pie.

The celebration is part of the school’s broader efforts to encourage tolerance and understanding through its No Place for Hate® designation. The Travis Peace Through Pie social is scheduled to take place from 3 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 in the Travis High School cafeteria, 1211 E. Oltorf. Space is limited, so Travis students, parents, teachers and community members interested in attending the celebration should contact Travis culinary instructor Rob McDonald to RSVP.
