Austin ISD Celebrates Juneteenth in Annual Parade

Date
Saturday, June 15, 2019 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Austin ISD invites the community to join faculty, staff, students and their families and the District All-Star Marching Band to march in the annual Juneteenth Historical Parade.

Juneteenth commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.

Participants will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the staging area at Comal Street and East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will proceed down Chicon Street and Rosewood Avenue to Rosewood Park, 2300 Rosewood Ave. We will have an AISD bus in our parade contingent for those who wish to participate but cannot walk for long distances.

Volunteers who want to help decorate vehicles should meet at 8 a.m. at Rising Star Baptist Church, 1710 E. 20th St.

The celebration includes a pageant, 2K Freedom Run/Walk, float contest and more. More details on the Juneteenth Festival are available online at juneteenthcentraltexas.com

The parade route is roughly 1.4 miles and it is highly suggested that attendees wear comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sunscreen.

All are welcome!
