With the Texas primary voter registration deadline fast approaching on February 5, Eli Eskew, an 18-year-old Senior at Crockett Early College High School, is not wasting any time.
On Friday, January 19, Eskew seized the opportunity to register to vote at a school event organized by The League of Women Voters (LWV) in the Austin Area.
What they’re saying: “I feel like it is my responsibility and I like to uphold myself to that duty,” Eskew said. Eskew saw the importance of registering to vote and encourages every person 18 years of age or older to do so as well.
The LWV is organizing voter registration events at several Austin ISD campuses, where they register students and educate them about voting. You can also register on their website.
Why it matters: Primary elections serve as a platform for voters to select candidates for the main election, and they can be nonpartisan or partisan.
“If you start voting young — you tend to become a lifetime voter and it’s kind of like you develop a habit, you do it once and then you don’t think about it anymore — it’s just there,” said Susana Carranza, representative of LWV in Austin Area.
By the numbers: In 2022 only about 17% of eligible adults voted in the primaries.
Carranza has been promoting voting awareness in high schools since last summer, hoping more schools will join this initiative. She shared the importance of setting an example for the new generations.
What’s next: The last day to register or update information is Feb. 5.

Al aproximarse rápidamente la fecha límite del 5 de febrero para el registro de votantes para las elecciones primarias de Texas, Eli Eskew, estudiante de 18 años de 12° grado en la Escuela Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana Crockett, no está perdiendo el tiempo.
