At Austin ISD, we dedicate our lives as educators and community leaders to the future generation, cultivating civic-minded students. And thus we must condemn in the strongest possible terms the violent insurrection that occurred in our nation’s Capitol this past week. Our students have witnessed an attack on our democracy against the horrific backdrop of the ongoing pandemic and are looking to us to make sense of our future. It is imperative that we speak out critically and emphatically that the actions of treasonous individuals that desecrated our Capitol were wrong and should not be tolerated.
As public schools, we have a unique opportunity to bring together diverse voices in safe spaces to foster social-emotional connections for critical conversations. We must listen with open hearts and minds as we process the pain our communities have endured — especially over the last year. We owe it to our children, our students, and their future to create these spaces for honest conversations about what is happening, the injustices that have brought us here, and the steps we will take for a stronger future in America.
The events of January 6 make it abundantly clear that our schools must engage and empower students, from an early age, with opportunities to participate in crucial conversations, civic engagement, and learn to use effective tools to find peaceful solutions to community problems.
Our legacy must be rooted in creating and developing strong, critical-thinking students who will carefully examine the power of words, especially of our elected politicians to prevent this shameful history from repeating itself. We must use this moment to share that we can disagree without disrespect. With hope for the future, we will use our strength as educators to rebuild our democracy for the generations to come. Let us always lead by example, for our students are always watching.

En el Austin ISD le dedicamos nuestras vidas como educadores y líderes comunitarios a la generación del futuro y cultivamos estudiantes con mentalidad cívica. Por lo tanto, debemos repudiar de la manera más firme posible la insurrección violenta que ocurrió en el capitolio de nuestra nación la semana pasada. Nuestros estudiantes han sido testigos de un ataque contra nuestra democracia con el horrífico telón de fondo de la pandemia en curso y se vuelven a nosotros para entender nuestro futuro. Es imperativo que expresemos crítica y enfáticamente que las acciones de los individuos traidores que profanaron nuestro capitolio estuvieron mal y no se deben tolerar.
Como escuelas públicas, tenemos la oportunidad única de unir diversas voces en espacios seguros para fomentar conexiones socioemocionales para conversaciones críticas. Debemos escuchar con mentes y corazones abiertos a medida que procesamos el dolor que han sufrido nuestras comunidades, especialmente durante el último año. Les debemos a nuestros niños, nuestros estudiantes y su futuro crear estos espacios para conversaciones sinceras sobre lo que está pasando, las injusticias que nos han llevado a esto y los pasos que tomaremos para un futuro más sólido en los Estados Unidos.
Los eventos del 6 de enero aclaran perfectamente que nuestras escuelas deben motivar y facultar a los estudiantes desde una edad temprana con oportunidades para tener conversaciones cruciales, participar cívicamente y aprender a utilizar herramientas eficaces para encontrar soluciones pacíficas a los problemas de la comunidad.
Nuestro legado debe estar arraigado en la formación y el desarrollo de estudiantes fuertes con pensamiento crítico que examinen atentamente el poder de las palabras, especialmente de nuestros políticos electos, para prevenir que se repita esta historia vergonzosa. Debemos utilizar este momento para compartir que podemos estar en desacuerdo sin irrespeto. Con esperanza en el futuro, utilizaremos nuestra fortaleza como educadores para reconstruir nuestra democracia para las generaciones por venir.
