Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Woolridge Elementary School. I visited the classroom of Ms. Andi Forness, a bilingual teacher who was implementing Creative Learning Initiative Strategies. This was a fantastic classroom experience where students acted out feelings as characters experienced them in text—a CLI teaching strategy called “statues.” What a joyful classroom environment! Thank you, Ms. Forness, for offering a wonderful classroom experience for our students. You made me #AISDProud!

I'm excited to attend and speak at the Austin Ed Fund's Inspire the Future Luncheon! This event is the Austin Ed Fund's largest fundraiser of the year and brings together 650+ community supporters and educators—all in support of our students. Funds raised support the Inspire the Future Grants Program which funds innovative projects at schools across Austin ISD. Learn more about the Austin Ed Fund, and if you are inspired to donate, there’s still time to visit their donations page. Remember—when we have Strong Schools, we have a Stronger Austin.

After Inspire the Future, I’ll head back to the office to meet with Senior Leaders and receive a quarterly financial report from our CFO. We will also receive an update from our Chief of Police, Wayne Sneed, on the police department's expenses to support HB3. We have already started budgeting for the 2024-25 school year, so receiving quarterly financial reports helps us plan.

Tuesday, October 31
Today is always a high-energy day at schools—lots of excitement and anticipation for the evening’s events. If you choose to trick-or-treat this evening, please bundle up and be safe.

I’ll start my day by having my one-on-one meeting with Trustee Zapata. After that, I’ll join my old friends on the 4th floor for their Annual Chili Cook-Off. In the afternoon, I will get an update on the 2022 Bond Program and attend the Governance Meeting with the Board.

I’ll spend the evening negotiating with my family for the dark chocolate in their bounty.

Wednesday, November 1
This morning I’ll start my day one-on-one with Dr. Hawley, Chief of the Office of Organizational Transformation (formerly the Office of Equity). I’ll then meet with our Academics Team and Trustee Kauffman to review our Multilingual Education Initiative. In the middle of the day, I’ll spend some time with other Central Texas Superintendents at the University of Texas to discuss the Power of Research Partnerships. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Trustee Hunter for our one-on-one.

Thursday, November 2
Today I’ll meet with Ricardo Zavala, the President of Dove Springs Proud. I’ll then spend time with Trustee Zapata to reflect on our Summer Youth Employment program; this was an excellent opportunity for students to gain employment skills throughout the City of Austin. For lunch, I’ll meet with Ken Zarifis from Education Austin. In the afternoon, I’ll attend our Executive Leadership Team meeting so we can ensure organizational alignment. Later in the day, I’ll have a one-on-one with Dr. Jacob Reach, our Chief of Governmental Relations & Board Services.

Friday, November 3
On Friday, my team will be at the Holdsworth Center for day one of the Texas Urban Council Retreat. The Texas Urban Council (TUC) consists of 11 urban districts in Texas: Aldine, Alief, Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Ysleta. We gather together to analyze data and learn about promising practices. The focus of this meeting is Early Literacy outcomes and College, Career and Military Readiness, and it lasts throughout the weekend.

Nos reunimos para analizar datos y conocer prácticas prometedoras. Esta reunión se centra en los resultados de la lectoescritura temprana y la preparación universitaria, carrera profesional y militar, y dura todo el fin de semana.

Last week, I was pleased to meet Mr. Joe Rodriguez at Akins ECHS. Mr. Rodriguez has been with the district for many years. Realizing how important it is for students to have positive relationships with the adults in the building, he decided to go back to school to get his certification. This allowed him to become a teaching assistant and continue supporting our students at the place he loves—Akins ECHS. To visit with someone who loves Austin ISD as much as I do was such a pleasure. Mr. Rodriguez, thank you for everything you do for our Akins Eagles. You make us #AISDProud!

As promised, we do want to provide you with an update on our Special Education Initiative. October 31 is our first big deliverable to the Texas Education Agency. This is a tremendous lift for our staff, and we appreciate all they do to help us provide the best services to our students.

Next week I’ll be engaged in professional learning with the Council of Great City Schools and at Holdsworth Center, so I thought we’d do something a little different.

As you know, Ms. Paty Rodriguez joined our team in August as the new Deputy Superintendent of the Office of Teaching, Learning and Leading. Ms. Rodriguez is responsible for the core work of our school district—here’s the TLL organizational chart. We thought this week we’d give you a glimpse into what the week of a Deputy Superintendent looks like.

Monday, October 23
I’ll start my day by visiting a few elementary campuses. Then I’ll head back to the office for our weekly Senior Leadership Team Meeting. I’ll meet with the Assistant Superintendents for our weekly connect meeting in the afternoon. Later in the day, I’ll work with the team to prepare for the November 9 Board Meeting.

Tuesday, October 24
Today, I will be at a full-day meeting about the budget process for the 2023-24 school year. Austin ISD adopted a $55 Million deficit budget for this school year. This meeting allows district leadership to see where we are in the current budget and identify opportunities for cost reduction. While we are strategically working to stretch every dollar we currently have, we hope the Texas Legislature will consider increasing the per-pupil allotment soon. Wednesday, October 25
I’ll start my day at Pickle Elementary to learn about their Discovery Den kickoff. The Discovery Den program revitalizes 16 elementary school libraries by the Defend the Dream Foundation and Derrick Johnson. Pickle Elementary was fortunate enough to receive 629 books, 8 soft cushion kid-friendly seats and new carpet for the story steps. After that, I will visit a few middle school campuses. The afternoon is dedicated to meeting with my elementary team to analyze current data and make plans to support students.

Thursday, October 26
On Thursday morning, I will attend Chiefs Corner. We meet once a week to workshop and vet ideas with one another and ensure all of the different departments in the organization are aligned to support the work that happens in our schools each day. From there, I’ll head to a luncheon with the Christi Center. The Christi Center is a fantastic organization that provides support networks, community education, and therapeutic activities that are free, peer-based and ongoing. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Dr. Dru Robinett and her Special Education team to review our upcoming submission to TEA.

Friday, October 27
I’ll start my day with my Directors Connect Meeting. This is an opportunity for the Directors within Teaching, Learning and Leading to calibrate and ensure alignment across the department. In the middle of the day, we’ll meet to work on professional development offerings for the upcoming semester and next school year. In the afternoon, I will interview a principal candidate and have time to prepare for the upcoming week.

El mensaje semanal de Matias

La semana pasada, tuve el gusto de conocer al Sr. Joe Rodríguez en la Preparatoria Akins. El Sr. Rodríguez ha estado en el distrito muchos años. Al darse cuenta de la importancia que tiene para los estudiantes contar con relaciones positivas con los adultos en el edificio, él decidió regresar a la escuela para obtener su certificación. Esto le permitió convertirse en un asistente de maestro y continuar apoyando a nuestros estudiantes en el lugar que ama, la Preparatoria Akins. Platicar con alguien que ama al Austin ISD tanto como yo, fue un gran placer. Sr. Rodríguez, gracias por todo lo que hace por nuestros Eagles de Akins. ¡Ustedes nos hacen sentir #OrgulloAISD!

Como se los prometimos, queremos proporcionarles una actualización sobre nuestra Iniciativa de Educación Especial. El 31 de octubre es el día de nuestro primer gran reporte a la Agencia de Educación de Texas. Esto levantará tremendamente a nuestro personal y agradecemos todo lo que hacen para proporcionar los mejores servicios a nuestros estudiantes.

La próxima semana estaré participando en aprendizaje profesional con el Consejo de Escuelas de Grandes Ciudades y en el Centro Holdsworth, así que pensé que haremos algo un poco diferente.

Como ya sabrán, la Srta. Paty Rodríguez se unió a nuestro equipo en agosto, como la nueva superintendente auxiliar de la Oficina de a la Oficina de Enseñanza, Aprendizaje y Liderazgo (TLL, por sus siglas en inglés). La Srta. Rodríguez es responsable del trabajo principal de nuestro distrito escolar, aquí está el organigrama de TLL. Pensamos que esta semana les mostraríamos un poquito de cómo será la semana de la superintendente auxiliar.

¡Hola a todos! ¡Ya han pasado 12 semanas desde que empecé en el Austin ISD y amo a la familia del Austin ISD! Durante mucho tiempo he admirado todas las cosas únicas que suceden aquí y me alegra ser parte del equipo.

Lunes, 23 de octubre
Comenzaré mi día visitando algunas escuelas primarias. Después regresaré a la oficina para asistir a nuestra junta semanal del Equipo de Liderazgo de Alto Rango. Me reuniré con los superintendentes asistentes para nuestra junta semanal de conexión en la tarde. Más tarde en el día, trabajaré con el equipo para prepararme para la junta de la mesa directiva del 9 de noviembre.

Martes, 24 de octubre
Hoy, tendré un día lleno de juntas sobre el proceso del presupuesto para el ciclo escolar 2023-24. El Austin ISD aprobó un déficit presupuestario de $55 millones para este ciclo escolar. Esta junta le da al liderazgo del distrito una oportunidad de ver dónde nos encontramos en el presupuesto actual e identificar oportunidades para reducir costos. Mientras estamos trabajando estratégicamente para estirar cada dólar que tenemos ahora, esperamos que la Legislatura de Texas considerará aumentar pronto la asignación por estudiante. Miércoles, 25 de octubre
Comenzaré mi día en la Primaria Pickle para conocer sobre su inicio de Discovery Den. Discovery Den es un programa para revitalizar la biblioteca de 16 escuelas primarias a través de la Fundación Defend the Dream y Derrick Johnson. Después de eso, visitaré algunos planteles de escuelas secundarias. Dedicaré la tarde a reunirme con el equipo de primarias para analizar la información actual y hacer planes para apoyar a los estudiantes.

Jueves, 26 de octubre
El jueves en la mañana, asistiré a Chiefs Corner. Nos reunimos una vez por semana para trabajar y analizar ideas entre nosotros y nos aseguramos de que todos los diferentes departamentos en la organización estén alineados para apoyar el trabajo que se realiza en nuestras escuelas todos los días. De ahí, pasaré a un almuerzo con el Centro Christi. El Centro Christi es una organización fantástica que brinda redes de apoyo, educación comunitaria y actividades terapéuticas que son gratis, entre compañeros y continuas. En la tarde, me reuniré con la Dra. Dru Robinett y su equipo de Educación Especial para revisar nuestra próxima presentación a la TEA.

Viernes, 27 de octubre
Empezaré mi día con mi junta de conexión con directores (Directors Connect). Esta es una oportunidad para los directores dentro de Enseñanza, Aprendizaje y Liderazgo para calibrar y asegurar la alineación entre el departamento. A mediados del día, me reuniré para trabajar en las ofertas de capacitación profesional para el próximo semestre y el próximo ciclo escolar. En la tarde, entrevistaré a un candidato a director y tendré tiempo de prepararme para la próxima semana.
