I hope it has been a week full of good news ✨ for all those who attended the parent conferences. 🍎

📅 A reminder that next Monday, Feb. 20, is a staff and student holiday for Presidents Day.

And…

We continue to celebrate 🎉 Black History Month and Career and Technical Education and we have two inspiring stories for you in this week’s edition.

Let’s start —

1 big thing: Feb. 20 deadline to participate in equity focus groups

🏫🍎 Austin ISD students, teachers and families are encouraged to apply by Monday, Feb. 20, to participate in a series of focus groups on their experiences with equity in the district.

Why it matters: As part of our commitment to improve equitable outcomes for students, we’ve partnered with the nonprofit American Institute for Research to conduct an equity assessment 📝 of district policies, practices, curricula and systems.

🔊AIR wants to hear what you think about our policies and education outcomes. The information from the focus groups, as well as districtwide data, will help AIR develop recommendations for how we might address equity issues.

Leading from the front: In January, AIR met with trustees, Interim Superintendent Matias Segura, principals and community members to discuss the plan for data collection and community engagement.

Anyone interested in participating in the focus groups can apply in English or Spanish.

📅 What’s next: AIR plans to deliver its recommendations in Fall 2023.

2. Austin ISD Celebrates 🎉 the Life of Dr. General Garwood Marshall

This is the third in a monthlong profile series spotlighting Black leaders and pathbreakers for whom Austin ISD schools are named.

As Austin ISD continues its celebration of Black History Month, we profile Dr. General Garwood Marshall: prominent member of Austin’s Black community, mathematical titan and tireless mentor to students in math and science.

🎓 Yellow Jacket and Morehouse Man: A proud graduate of The Original L.C. Anderson High School 🏫, Marshall earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1957.

💍 After Morehouse, Dr. Marshall married his former high school sweetheart, Marian Lavon Marshall, and taught math at a Georgia high school, winning statewide recognition for his teaching 🏆.

Following the completion of his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin 🐂 in 1966, the Marshalls returned to Austin. He began teaching at what is now Huston-Tillotson University and earned his doctorate of education in mathematics from the University of Houston in 1976.

💬 Marshall’s widow remembers the Anderson days: “In high school, because he did so well in geometry, when the geometry teacher would go out of town for games—because he was also a coach—he would allow General and other students to teach his classes. I sort of thought he might help me get through that class,” Marian Lavon Marshall said previously.

🎓 STEM legacy: In 1990, Marshall started what would become a part of his educational legacy with AusPREP—Austin Pre-freshman Engineering Program—a free summer program for middle and high school students who were interested in 🔬science, technology, engineering and ➕➖ math.

🏫 What’s next: This fall, students will walk through the doors of the brand-new Dr. General Garwood Marshall Middle School in Northeast Austin. Trustees voted in June 2022 to name the school after Marshall.

3. ✨CTE Spotlight: Jennis Egan applies art🎨 in her cosmetology program

February is Career and Technical Education Month. We’re highlighting star students who are jump-starting their careers in our CTE programs.

✨ This week the spotlight is on Jennis Mae Egan, a junior in the cosmetology program at Crockett Early College High School.

Austin ISD cosmetology program: a tuition-free, 4-year commitment program that prepares students for the state cosmetology licensing exam.

How it started: When Egan started high school, she set a goal to graduate with a diploma plus career skills.

Academics + career: Egan attends Akins Early College High School for her core academic classes and rides a Capital Metro bus every other school day to Crockett to participate in the cosmetology program.

What they’re saying: “I really like doing hair color … it feels like art, like all the colors and being able to design something and make someone happy. It’s so fun!” said Egan.

Special thanks for Egan’s cosmetology instructor, Idaleiza Villarreal. “She’s honest and doesn’t sugar coat things,” Egan said. “It’s like knowing someone who has been doing it for so long and making sure that I’m doing it correctly.”

What’s next: Egan plans to finish the program and obtain her cosmetology license so she can start working right after high school graduation.

4. 🏫🍎Trustees Approve Revised 2023–24 Calendar 📅

✅ Austin ISD trustees have approved a revised calendar 📅 for 2023-24, incorporating feedback to recognize important holidays for the community. ☀️

What’s new: Changes include the removal of the elementary parent conference evenings, an additional professional development day, and changes to some holidays.

There are no changes to the start date, end date, or Winter Break.

By the numbers: The new 2023–24 calendar maintains the state-mandated number of instructional minutes for students and required duty days for teachers.

The calendar balances days between the fall and spring semesters for a total of 173 instructional days and adds one professional development day. 👀 See the full Austin ISD academic calendar for 2023–24.

👂 Listen and learn: The current calendar incorporates feedback from multiple district advisory councils and Let's Talk.

What's next: In September, the district will convene a community task force to review feedback and develop calendars for 2024–25 and beyond. Learn more about the Calendar Task Force.

We know some families and staff may need alternative arrangements for elementary parent conference days next year, and we’ll ensure there’s a clear process for selecting a different day.

📅 1 Algo importante: La fecha límite para participar en los grupos de sondeo de la equidad es el 20 de febrero

Se les anima a los estudiantes, maestros y padres del Austin ISD 🏫🍎 a presentar su solicitud antes del lunes, 20 de febrero para participar en una serie de grupos de sondeo sobre las experiencias individuales con la equidad en el distrito.

2. Austin ISD celebra 🎉 la vida del Dr. General Marshall

✨Esta semana los reflectores se centran en Jennis Mae Egan, estudiante de onceavo grado en el programa de cosmetología de la Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana Crockett .

El programa de cosmetología del Austin ISD: un programa sin costo de matrícula, de 4 años de duración, que prepara a los estudiantes para el examen de licencia de cosmetología del estado.

Cómo empezó: Cuando Egan empezó la preparatoria, se fijó el objetivo de graduarse con un diploma más destrezas para una carrera técnica.

Estudio académico + carrera técnica: Egan asiste a la Preparatoria de Universidad Temprana Akins para sus clases académicas básicas y viaja en un autobús de Capital Metro cada dos días escolares a la Preparatoria Crockett para participar en el programa de cosmetología.

Lo que están diciendo: "Me gusta mucho hacer el tinte del cabello... se siente como arte, poder usar todos los colores y poder diseñar algo y hacer feliz a alguien. Es muy divertido", dijo Egan.

Un agradecimiento especial para la instructora de cosmetología de Egan, Idaleiza Villarreal. "Ella es honesta y no anda con rodeos", dijo Egan. "Es como conocer a alguien que lleva tanto tiempo haciéndolo y asegurarse de que lo estoy haciendo correctamente".

✅ Los miembros de la mesa directiva del Austin ISD han aprobado un 📅 calendario actualizado para 2023-24, incorporando los comentarios para reconocer celebraciones importantes para la comunidad.

¿Qué es nuevo?: Los cambios incluyen quitar las tardes de conferencias con los padres de familia de primaria, un día adicional de capacitación profesional y cambios a algunos días feriados.

No hay cambios en la fecha de inicio, la fecha de finalización o para las vacaciones de invierno.

Según las cifras: El nuevo calendario 2023-24 mantiene los minutos de instrucción para los estudiantes y los días de servicio de los maestros que exige el estado.

Previous long-range planning efforts

In April 2017, the Board adopted a 25-year Facilities Master Plan, which informed the development of a $1 billion bond investment approved by voters to modernize schools and create learning spaces worthy of our students’ talents as they prepare for an ever-changing global marketplace. The FMP called for a minor update every two years, and a major update every five years.
