Welcome Back! I hope you had time to rest over the break and are feeling ready to tackle the next four weeks. This time between the fall and winter breaks is busy in schools; teachers and students are trying to finish up the first semester and celebrate how far we’ve come. Please join me in cheering on our staff and students in these final four weeks.

I also want to acknowledge that this time of year can also be challenging. If you’re needing support, help is available. Please contact your campus counselors, parent support specialists or someone you trust. As busy as this time of year can be, it is important that we take care of ourselves. Austin ISD is a special place because you’re a part of our community—and we want you to know how important you are to us!

Where I’ll be and who I’ll meet

Monday, November 27
Today, I’ll start my day meeting with Trustee Foster for our one-on-one meeting. I’ll then meet with my Senior Leadership team to discuss our plans for December and dive into our initiatives for the spring semester. Later in the day, I’ll get an update on the 2022 Bond Program and meet with Ashley Paz, our Lone Star Governance Coach. I’ll end my day meeting with my team to review our crisis management and emergency response procedures.

Tuesday, November 28
This morning is the E3 Alliance Superintendents’ Meeting. This is where superintendents in the area meet to discuss how we’re leveraging our partnership with E3 using their data analytics to inform decisions to best serve our students. After that, I’ll meet with Trustee Zapata. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Holdsworth Superintendent in Residence, Dr. Marcelo Cavazos. The trustees and I will then meet to plan upcoming board meetings in our Governance Committee before I meet with the Austin Council of PTAs.

Wednesday, November 29
I’ll start the day meeting with our Police Department, Talent Strategy, Finance and Technology teams to discuss our badging process. I’ll then meet with Sheriff Sally Hernandez to discuss how we can best serve the city before I head to a meeting with the Austin Chamber to discuss education and partnerships in the city. In the afternoon, I’ll meet with Trustee Lugo for our one-on-one, and then I’ll meet with my team to discuss how we are progressing on our Special Education initiative.

Thursday, November 30
Today I’ll start my day meeting with Dara Harmon, CEO of Austin100. After that, I have the pleasure of having lunch with the one-and-only Ali Khataw, outgoing Chair of the Austin Chamber. After lunch, I’ll head back to the office for our Executive Leadership Team Meeting before I head to Mills Elementary to join their Super Fun Book Club, hosted by Ms. Amy Jackon. I’ll end the day by meeting with Trustee Gonzalez.

Friday, December 1
It’s December 1, which means just 22 days until the winter break! I’ll start today off by meeting with longtime champion of our district, Taryn Kinney. I’ll then meet with the City of Austin to discuss Joint Use Space—where our campuses are used as both playgrounds and parks. From there, I’ll meet with the Superintendent Student Equity Council, followed by a meeting with Dr. Hawley. I’ll wrap up my Friday by meeting with our Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Paty Rodriguez.

¡Bienvenidos de vuelta! Espero que hayan tenido tiempo para descansar durante las vacaciones y que nuestros estudiantes y el personal se sientan listos para afrontar las próximas cuatro semanas. Este tiempo entre las vacaciones de otoño e invierno es de mucha actividad en las escuelas; los maestros y estudiantes están tratando de terminar el primer semestre y celebrar a nuestros estudiantes. Por favor, únanse a mí para animar a nuestro personal y estudiantes en estas últimas cuatro semanas.

También quiero reconocer que esta época del año también puede ser difícil. Si necesitan apoyo, hay ayuda disponible. Luego me reuniré con mi Equipo de Alto Rango para discutir nuestros planes para diciembre y analizar nuestras iniciativas para el semestre de primavera. 1 big thing: Austin ISD meets key milestones in eliminating Special Education evaluation backlog

Austin ISD has met major milestones in the agreed order with TEA to address issues around meeting the needs of students with disabilities.

Why it matters: The district has been laser-focused on eliminating the backlog of evaluations and providing Compensatory Services to help students make up for progress or skills they may have lost when their special education services were not provided.

Yes, and..The district is committed to transforming how students and families experience Special Education in Austin ISD—and that’s about more than just meeting deadlines.

The district is working to implement an inclusive model for Special Education that aims to serve students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment along with their peers. This entails:

Get involved: Austin ISD is recruiting members for the district’s new Special Education Family Advisory Committee. Submit your application by January 10.

Next Steps: The next major milestone the district must meet comes December 31.

Hoop Dance and what it means to be Native American

Join us this month as we learn about the rich cultures and heritage of the Native American Community as Austin ISD celebrates Native American Heritage Month.

To the sound of the drum…and 17 hoops in his hands, Stephen Freeman uses one hoop at a time to tell a story.

It’s called Native American Hoop Dance—a dancer skillfully maneuvers the circular hoop around their body to create intricate and mesmerizing patterns.

“It’s very extremely engaging, I really like the social aspect of it—where I can go into a performance and try to be inspired as much as possible,” Freeman said.

Freeman uses inspiration from people to create his dance routines and tell different stories.

A mix of cultures: Freeman is from Arizona. His mother is Hopi and Chinese, and his father is white. They met at the Hopi reservation.

Freeman has two children in Austin ISD and for him it is important to teach them about their culture so that they will continue to teach other generations.

Teacher Assistants Shine in Austin ISD

This week at Austin ISD, we celebrate Teacher Assistant week by turning the spotlight on those who work tirelessly side by side with teachers. They support and enhance the learning experience for students!

Why it matters: TAs support all Austin ISD educators, fostering positive learning environments and providing invaluable assistance to students.

Ms. Dora Monsivais has helped shape Austin ISD's educational landscape for a remarkable 18 years! This academic year she embarked on a new journey by transitioning into a full-fledged teaching role in Pre-K at Sunset Valley Elementary.

In Ms. Monsivais's own words: "Every day is a different day, and that’s what makes this job amazing,” said Ms Monsivais. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you never stop learning, and working as a teacher assistant for over 18 years allowed me to witness the transformative power of education."

Algo importante: Austin ISD cumple metas claves en la eliminación de evaluaciones retrasadas de la Educación Especial

El Austin ISD cumplió sus primeros metas en la orden acordada con la Agencia de Educación de Texas (TEA, por sus siglas en inglés) para abordar las cuestiones en torno a la satisfacción de las necesidades de los estudiantes con discapacidades.

Por qué es importante: El distrito se ha centrado en eliminar el retraso de las evaluaciones y proporcionar servicios compensatorios para ayudar a los estudiantes a recuperar el progreso o las habilidades que pudieron haber adquirido durante el tiempo que no se les brindaron los servicios de educación especial.

Sí, y... el distrito se ha comprometido a transformar la forma en que los estudiantes y las familias experimentan la Educación Especial en el Austin ISD. Entendemos que es más que el simple cumplimiento de las metas.

El distrito está trabajando para implementar un modelo inclusivo de Educación Especial que pretende atender a los estudiantes con discapacidades en el entorno menos restrictivo y junto con sus compañeros. Esto implica:

“Hoop Dance” Tradiciones de los Pueblos Nativos Americanos

Acompañe al Austin ISD este mes mientras aprendemos sobre la culturas y herencia de las Comunidades Nativas Americanas

Al sonido del tambor...y con 17 aros en sus manos, Stephen Freeman va usando aro por aro para contar su historia.

Se le llama la Danza con Aros de los Nativos Estadounidenses, o en inglés, “Hoop Dance”--el danzante mueve el aro con increíble destreza alrededor de su cuerpo para crear patrones complicados y fascinantes.

"Es extremadamente bello, realmente me gusta el aspecto social del baile -- porque puedo actuar y al mismo tiempo tratar de inspirarme tanto como sea posible,"dijo Freeman.

Freeman se inspira de la gente para crear su rutina de danza y contar diferentes historias.

De acuerdo con la página Ya-Native, el Aro es un símbolo de la unidad, la plenitud y la continuidad de la vida. Su utilización en la danza con aros está destinada a honrar y conectarse con los espíritus.

Una mezcla de culturas: Freeman es de Arizona, su madre es de origen Hopi y Chino, y su padre es un hombre blanco. Sus padres se conocieron en la reserva hopi.

Freeman tiene dos niños en el Austin ISD y para él es importante enseñarles sobre su cultura, para que a su vez, ellos continúen enseñando a otras generaciones.

Los asistentes de maestros sobresalen en Austin ISD

Esta semana en Austin ISD, celebramos la semana del Asistente del Maestro (TA por sus siglas en inglés) destacando el trabajo de quienes mano a mano apoyan a los maestros y mejoran la experiencia educativa de los estudiantes.

Por qué es importante: Los TA apoyan a todos los educadores de Austin ISD, fomentando ambientes de aprendizaje positivos y proporcionando ayuda invaluable a los estudiantes.

La Sra. Dora Monsiváis lleva 18 años ayudado formar el panorama educativo del Austin ISD. Este año Monsiváis emprendió un nuevo desafío y completó el trabajo necesario para convertirse en maestra de Pre-K en Sunset Valley Elementary.

En sus propias palabras, "Cada día es un día diferente, y eso es lo que hace que este trabajo sea increíble,” dice la Sra. Monsiváis. “No importa la edad que tengas, nunca dejas de aprender. Trabajar como asistente de maestro por más de 18 años me permitió ser testigo del poder transformador de la educación".

Esta semana en Austin ISD, celebramos la semana del Asistente del Maestro (TA por sus siglas en inglés) destacando a aquellos que trabajan incansablemente detrás de bastidores para apoyar a los maestros y mejorar la experiencia de aprendizaje de los estudiantes.

Por qué es importante: Los TA apoyan a todos los educadores de Austin ISD, fomentando ambientes de aprendizaje positivos y proporcionando ayuda invaluable a los estudiantes.

La Sra. Dora Monsiváis ha ayudado a dar forma al panorama educativo de Austin ISD durante 18 años, y este año académico se emprendió en un nuevo desafío al hacer la transición a una función de docente, como maestra de Pre-K en Sunset Valley Elementary.

En sus propias palabras, "Cada día es un día diferente, y eso es lo que hace que este trabajo sea increíble,” dice la Sra. Monsiváis. “No importa la edad que tengas, nunca dejas de aprender. Trabajar como asistente de maestro por más de 18 años me permitió ser testigo del poder transformador de la educación".

¡Den las gracias hoy a un TA! Agradezcamos y celebremos a los TA por su dedicación, fortaleza y por el papel fundamental que desempeñan en la formación del futuro de nuestros estudiantes.

“Hoop Dance” Tradiciones de los Pueblos Nativos Americanos

Acompañe al Austin ISD este mes mientras aprendemos sobre la culturas y herencia de la Comunidad Nativa Americana

Al sonido del tambor...y con 17 aros en sus manos, Stephen Freeman usa de uno por uno para contar una historia.

Se le llama la Danza con Aros de los Nativos Estadounidenses, o en inglés, “Hoop Dance”--el danzante usa el aro que con destreza maneja alrededor de su cuerpo para crear patrones intrincados y fascinantes.

"Es extremadamente atractivo, realmente me gusta el aspecto social del mismo-- donde puedo entrar en actuación y tratar de inspirarme tanto como sea posible, "dijo Freeman.

Freeman usa la inspiración de la gente para crear su rutina de danza y contar diferentes historias.

De acuerdo con la página Ya-Native, el Aro es un símbolo de la unidad, la plenitud y la continuidad de la vida. Su utilización en la danza con aros está destinada a honrar y conectarse con los espíritus.

Una mezcla de culturas: Freeman es de Arizona, su madre es Hopi y China, y su padre es blanco. Se conocieron en la reserva hopi.

Freeman tiene dos niños en el Austin ISD y para él es importante enseñarles sobre su cultura, para que ellos continúen enseñando a otras generaciones.

“Es maravilloso aprender sobre otras culturas, cuando estás aprendiendo sobre otras culturas que no son la tuya, solo recuerda ser respetuoso", dijo Freeman.

📣 No olviden darle un vistazo a la Asamblea de Indígenas Norteamericanos y el Festival Indígena Estadounidense de Austin, “The Austin Powwow”, este sábado, 18 de noviembre en el Centro de Exposiciones de Travis. Mi equipo y yo estaremos ahí para apoyar a Steven durante el debut de su presentación de la Danza con Aros y ver la Gran Entrada a las 12 p.m.
