AISD Revises 2013-14 School Calendar

Austin, TX—This week, the Austin Independent School District’s Board of Trustees voted to revise the 2013-14 school year calendar, moving spring break up one week to coincide with the University of Texas at Austin’s schedule.

The district’s 2014 spring break is now scheduled from Monday, March 10, through Friday, March 14.

There are no other changes to the calendar.

Flu Tips: Keep Yourself and Your Family Healthy

AISD Student Health Services, in collaboration with Dell Children’s Medical Center and Seton Healthcare Family, continues to monitor illness in the Austin region and absenteeism at AISD schools as a result of influenza and the common cold. 

The health of our students, staff members and AISD families is a priority. To help you stay healthy this time of year, AISD offers the following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control:

League of Women Voters Hosts Community Meeting Regarding District 2

Where: South Austin Recreation Center, 1100 Cumberland Road

What: The League of Women Voters of the Austin Area will host a community conversation that will focus on issues that are particular concern in District 2. Participation requires pre-registration. You may register by emailing Nancy Oelklaus at nancyoelklaus@gmail.com.

Coffee, breakfast tacos, and interpretation services will be provided.

Groundhog Day Celebration Benefits School's Spring Garden

Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog prophet, is not the only one who will get to test his shadow this Groundhog Day. 

Just like Punxsutawney Phil will emerge from his hole in Pennsylvania to shed light on whether winter will linger another six weeks or end early, families and community members can test their shadows as part of the many Groundhog Day activities from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the corner of E. Eighth St. and Swenson Ave.

Free Spanish-language Parent Workshops Thursday and Saturday

The Austin independent School District’s Hispanic Futures program presents Los Años Maravillosos (the Wonder years), a new Spanish-language workshop for parents of students in grades fifth through eighth.

The workshop is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Burnet Middle School, 8401 Hathaway Drive; and 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Garcia Middle School, 7414 Johnny Morris Road.
