Applications for 2016-2017 now available! Deadline to apply, Friday, July 22, 2016.
Created in 2007, UpClose offers a unique opportunity to learn about the Austin Independent School District. Through monthly meetings, participants learn about the District's infrastructure, programs, and services, and understand the challenges and opportunities. Each month, AISD UpClose classes meet at various district sites to have an "inside look" at key programs. Meetings are held from 11:30am-1:00pm on the last Wednesday of each month. The program begins in September 2016 and ends May 2017. In addition to monthly meetings, participants create an impact project that is school-based.
To date, more than 276 participants have gone through the program. AISD UpClose graduates are challenged to become leaders and advocates for the District, to volunteer for service on committees and task forces, to speak up when misinformation is circulating, and to encourage other parents and community members to get informed and involved.
*Program is available for parents and community members only. Not available for district staff.
"UpClose Leadership was a wonderful introduction to AISD. Not only did it give me the opportunity to better understand the district's challenges, priorities, and organizational structure, it also allowed me to meet the hardworking people who keep AISD moving every day, and most importantly, it helped me to connect and build relationships with other engaged members of the Austin community. I would certainly recommend this experience to anyone interested in learning more about AISD". Juan Pablo Martinez, 2016 Graduate
"It's so important to be an informed voter and consumer. If your taxes go to the district, if you vote in the district or have kids who attend district schools, you owe it to yourself to apply to AISD UpClose." Janis Daemmrich, 2015 Graduate
"UpClose provides an excellent overview of the complexity of Austin ISD's system, strengths and challenges. For anyone that partners with, is a parent of an AISD student or a citizen concerned with public education, UpClose is a wonderful way to engage." Shira Ledman, 2015 Graduate
