The Student Teaching Program phases include:
Austin ISD offers effective teachers the opportunity to share their vast knowledge and expertise in the area of teaching and instruction as Cooperating Teachers. Effective teachers are recruited through an eBlast from the Office of Educator Quality and are approved by their principal. Cooperating Teacher recruitment occurs in March for the Fall semester and again in October for the Spring semester.
CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS
Austin ISD provides criminal history checks for students wanting to student teach, intern or observe in our classrooms. This process includes students having to complete a short application in our AppliTrack system. The application provides the information that allows for the completion of the background check. All student teachers, interns and observers must be cleared through a criminal history check before arriving on campuses.
Student teacher placement requests are accepted from partnering universities, colleges and alternative certification programs to ensure appropriate supervision of the student teacher. Students in pursuit of a student teacher placement are to contact their university, college or alternative certification program. Student teacher placements occur in April for the fall semester and again in November for the Spring semester. The length of time and specifics of placement are determined by the university, college or alternative certification program.
As part of Austin ISD's Student Teaching Program we hold orientation sessions each semester for incoming student teachers. During this orientation we share Austin ISD's expectations related to ethics & conduct as well as an overview of Austin ISD’s initiatives and programs. All student teachers obtaining a placement in Austin ISD must attend the Austin ISD Student Teacher Orientation. Date, time and location are provided to the university.
The Professional Learning Team offers effective teachers the opportunity to share their vast knowledge and expertise in the area of teaching and instruction with student teachers, interns and observers from our partnering universities, colleges, alternative certification programs and other teacher preparation programs. Cooperating Teachers are lifelong learners who successfully implement best practices, are proficient in interacting and communicating with student teachers and are dedicated to helping mold our future educators. Effective Cooperating Teachers are an intricate part in the development and success of the student teacher.
