News from Dr. Cruz: What Austin Needs

Team AISD,

The Austin Chamber of Commerce October job openings report gives valuable insight to the available employment in the Austin area, as well as the qualifications that job-seekers need.

Registered nurses, software developers and marketing managers are the top three available occupations, with tech-related positions accounting for 19 percent of openings. Employers are looking for applicants with soft skills like oral and written communication abilities, creativity and being team-oriented.

As we work together to prepare students for college, career and life, we're using key strategies to meet the needs of Austin employers.

DTC70—The Direct-to-College Achievement Plan—is an initiative that AISD is pursuing with multiple school districts, chambers of commerce and businesses. The group has committed to enroll 70 percent of the class of 2016 directly in higher education.

I'm also proud that AISD's Career and Technical Education provides students the tools they need to pursue work immediately upon graduation, and the skills learned in Social and Emotional Learning give AISD grads a competitive edge.

Educating the future workforce of Austin is a big job, and I'm #AISDproud of each of you for putting your heart into this work.
