News from Dr. Cruz: Safe learning environments

Team AISD,

Austin ISD has a responsibility to provide safe learning environments for all students. That responsibility is extremely important to me, and I want to assure you that I support our teachers and staff as they create safe spaces for students so that they can realize their potential. I know that you are doing the hard work, and I appreciate you.

On Feb. 20, our board of trustees publicly affirmed this support, passing a resolution that AISD will, “strive to create the safest possible environments for its students and employees, providing them the foundation needed to learn, thrive, seek assistance and information, and reach each child’s potential in an education-focused environment, free of insecurity and fear, for all its employees, students and their families, regardless of immigration status.”

The resolution reiterates our district's commitment to No Place for Hate, an anti-bullying initiative from the Anti-Defamation League. AISD is the largest No Place for Hate district in the nation, and I am so #AISDProud of our staff!

This weekend, I encourage you to join me at AISD's 34th Annual African-American Heritage Celebration. The event is a time to celebrate our diversity and honor Black History Month and the legacies of leaders throughout our school community. We will recognize academic accomplishments of students and present community members with awards in giving, educational leadership and volunteer service.

In everything we do, it all comes down to one thing: our students. And our students are the inspiration for #WhyITeach posts, including this video from Akins High School teachers. Thanks to each and every one of you for giving your talent to support our kids. I am grateful that you are part of our AISD family.

Sincerely,

Paul Cruz, Ph.D.
